View Full Version : MFH2 issues with splitters
Hey everyone. I've searched but couldn't find anything that fully answered my questions.
I install MFH1 and 2 in an MDU with around around 200 units. Its also in a upscale neighborhood where most people have an HD/HDDVR in every room with 5 homes to a run on average. We install around 15 hd receivers per run.
Here are my questions with some background
1) I'm using the sws 4way splitters (like the one on the link below) to run up to four rooms. This morning I ran the customers 3 HD recievers through the splitter pictured in the link. When i would connect a feed, master bedroom, to the power passing port it would not come up. I tried swapping rooms and they all had the same result. So my question is, are all the splitters really only 3 way or am i connecting sometjhing wrong? The customer was coming off the swm 2 port on the swm8.
I'v also used LMX-2 splitters when i was on a trouble ticket and out of basic splitters and it worked fine.
2) What is the difference between tradewinds hrs4p and the holland brand and sws type splitters? I've asked around and gotten mixed answers.
3) Can you split an MFH2 signal too many times?
I've only been installing for about 4 months and 3and a half of those months have been on mfh1 and I've had no training on mfh2. I'm affraid I'm missing something big.
Thanks for the help. Sorry for bad spelling. I need to register the computer.

A. You can only split MFH2 to a total of 8 tuners per SWM Module
B. As long as the Splitter is rated 5-2300 mHz it will work.
c. The LMX-2 splitter is a 30.00 spliktter designed for MFH1 only, using them in an MFH2 system could get you canned by the man.
d. Sounds to me like you had 1 too many tuners on the SWM Module, Thats why you get a black screen, that or you just had a bum splitter.

I'm aware that the swm-8 can only have 8 receivers on it. My main concern was the power pass port not working with a receiver. The man doesn't care as long as the customer is happy.
I was also wondering how many people out there have had swm's go bad?

The specs for the SWS splitter does not care if power passes on it. The SWM does not need power from the receiver to change the channels, so power passing splitters will work. I have had about 12 SWMs go bad, although I have a question. Does the FMC Rack have 6 SWMs in it, if so, does it have all three power supplies hooked to it? This is an issue we have found in the field lately. It will cause a weird array of problems if only 1 or 2 are hooked up.

SWM-8 can only have 8 tuners. A DVR counts as two tuners.
It sound like you to many tuners on one SWM.

I dont use the Racks with the swm's. The builder didnt allow us enough room on the side of the building to install them. So we are having to mount the swm's side by side with individual power supply's to each.
I had an issue where coming out of the swm will be around -30-31 db and I hit the customers unit around -45db. They called the next week and the db level had dropped to around -56db. We swapped the swm and it came back up. How can those things cost so much and go bad so fast/often.
Again, I know how many tuners I can jhave on one SWM.

Your post said "8 receivers" not tuners. That's why the other poster wanted to remind you using the specific word "tuners". That's all.

This is a DVR operational question. When looking at the signals screen for SWM I have sometimes seen one or two 0's on two swm channels. In all cases the SWM channels are reading in the 90's. I don't seem to be missing any channels and all seems normal. I see 0's on some of the channels a normal indication?
Thanks!

You will only see signals on "active" SWM channels, that is, channels where a tuner is connected. The others will be zero.
