If I remember correctly a phone connection was required
I see no reason to keep throwing way $40 a month on a land line

Years ago you had to have one. That is no longer necessary.
No PPV or CID. Which you probably already know.

You shouldn't. They rarely audit it but it is in the customer agreement so they can. I had one friend that lost Sunday Ticket because his cat pulled the phone cord out of the wall. A call to a CSR confirmed that his receiver hadn't called in for 6 months so they cut off ST. He plugged it back in and ST was restored. But that was nearly 10 years ago and I have really heard much about that anymore since they pretty much killed piracy a few years ago.

Have several clients w/out phone line, NO problems with ANY sports subs, including ST or other season tickets.

Or if you have internet hooked up to the box you can order PPV via remote.

I think that only works for HD.

Ah ha! So that's the answer - you need an internet (or DoD) capable receiver, which as of this moment, is only the HD DVR.

I wouldn't mind hooking a phone line to my reciever but I have Vonage and the computer and Vonage modem are on the other side of the house.

You can plug a phone line from the Vonage box into your wall jack, even using a splitter, and the entire house will be "back-fed".
Then you can plug into any phone jack in the house for Vonage.

Just be sure you got all the wall jack disconnected from your phone line coming into your house at the box outside your house.

yes, the demarc, and there should be a plug there to unplug to make disconnect simple

I tried that to no avail.

That may have been the problem.
I just checked and discovered that I don't have a phone jack anywhere in my living room. Foiled again.:(

You can run a phone line to that room if you want. It is very easy.

Wireless modem jacks, they transmit the phone signal over the power lines in your house. I have my Vonage box in my computer room. Wireless modem jack there, phone line from Vonage box into it.
Wireless modem jack in my home theater, phone line from it to my receivers just like there was a "real" phone jack there.
Oh, don't every hook up your Vonage box directly to the in house phone jacks unless you disconnect the phone line coming in from the pole. You may not be able to do this if you can't access the phone companies phone box. If you don't do this you risk blowing out your Vonage box. The Vonage FAQs go into more detail on this.

I have tried to do this with adult and sports (like boxing) before only to be told no phone line connected. I can use DoD though. I've never tried a regular PPV movie.

+1
I use those for two D* IRD locations, with my Vonage.
They work fine, caller ID, too.
You need to listen to the sound quality, when installing. They work best when the transmitter and receiver are both on the same circuit (same breaker) if possible. I did move the transmitter around to a few outlets, until I got the cleanest connection.
