Just got my Dish installed on the 7th and I don't know why I didn't switch years ago! The picture is so clean and sharp I can hardly believe my eyes. In fact, my kitchen television works so well I no longer am shopping for a new one. It turned out that the set was not bad but the wiring was the the culprit.
Cablevision last rate increase was the last straw and I finally went out and did all the research to get a dish. I read about people complaining about rate increases on this board but consider this; I was paying Cablevision:

$12.30-Broadcast Basic
$47.30-Optimum Service (Cablevision's name of expanded basic)
$ 9.95-1 channel of HBO
$ 3.20-Cost of each Analog box, I had 4
$ .30-Cost of each remote control, I had 4
$ 1.50-Premium Programming on Additional Outlet

I got all this and my High Speed Internet Modem was an additional $45.00. The normal price is $50.00 but since I am family cable subscriber I got a whole $5.00 discount.

I kept the cable modem but am finally free from Cablevision's terrible service. I live in one on the towns that has the highest broadband penetration in the nation and this cable company has yet to make digital cable available to us. The service was terrible. You could be watching programs and the screen would go red and start beeping as part of a test at the most inconvenient times. There was no channel selection, the packages were full of cablevision channels that were worthless and I was tired subsidizing Cablevision's losing sports teams aka Rangers, Knicks.

I forgot all about those annoying EBS tests. I got rid of Cablevision in May 2000 and have been flaming anyone who complains about D* and E*'s "exorbitant" increases. They are nothing compared to what the wireheads pay AND since I signed up on the Digital Dynamite plan, I haven't had a price increase since I signed up. It expires in June, 2003 however so I'm sure you'll here lots of moaning from people when they're "price protection" period elapses.

Oh, and my bill is $160 a month (Everything Pak + Locals + Multisports + TV5 & RFI + Extacy/Playboy + 3 West Coast Channels (ABC in NYC STILL won't let me get ABC-W) This also includes the Digital Dynamite fee which included $10 for equipment but waived one of the extra $5 fees for the extra receiver. I've got a 721 and 2 Dishplayers hooked up (+ a 2700 and 4900 gathering dust on the shelf... the two leased units that I got in 2000 -- as soon as June hits I send them back.

You can subscribe to Playboy, EXTc, Hot Zone on E*, not that I would know but Playboy is around $14.00 a month, Hot Zone $20.00 a month and EXTc $27.99 a month. I got my E* last summer and am very happy with the service. My COX cable increased its basic rate from $9.95 a month to $15.95 a month. I have to keep basic cable for my locals, but HATE the PQ and sound. Digital cable and broadband isn't offered where I live. I subscribe to E* Top 150 plus the Superstation pack and FOX Dallas and FOX LA. If I can ever get my locals over E* (not likely) COX cable will be no more in my home.
