Nimiq 2 satellite anomaly

OTTAWA, Feb. 20 /CNW/ - Earlier today Telesat experienced a malfunction
on Nimiq 2 which affected the available power on the spacecraft.
Measures were immediately taken to restore the affected traffic. The
majority of the transponders are functioning normally and the situation has
stabilized. A plan has also been implemented to minimize the impact of the
anomaly on the customer.
Telesat is working with the Nimiq 2 spacecraft manufacturer, Lockheed
Martin, to understand the cause of the anomaly and determine the next steps.

Satellites usually have extra transponders on them so that they can turn on a backup one if the main one burns out for some reason. They will probably test to see what is wrong, and if they need to turn on a spare transponder.

Other souces are saying PPV and HDTV will be restored in a week.

yep, the plan is called "move Nimiq1 back to cover the damaged Nimiq2".

As of 11PM their are still 4 transponders that are out. 5,6,15 and 16

This points out what a disaster it would be if E* lost E7 or E8 or D* lost D4s. They really do not have the backup capacity in place to handle all the LIL now. A lot of local markets would end up being dropped. I know D-7s will be a backup for D-4s, but D-7s will be filled up with LIL too before long and a lot of markets would have to be dropped. I hope they get more backup capacity up soon.
