View Full Version : Why does the 721 do this?

Whenever I'm recording back to back shows, say the entire Thursday night lineup on NBC, and I'm watching a different channel, I always get the "Main and PIP are both in use" popups. Is there a way to just get rid of the popup without changing or stopping the 721 from recording?

Make sure the recordings aren't trying to start early or end late, so that it doesn't need to try and use both tuners. If there's no overlap in the recording times, you shouldn't get that message.

Oh, so if I leave the defaults of starting a minute early and ending 3 minutes late, it'll try to use the second tuner?

Why won't it just act as if the other tuner is recording?

Well, you've told it to record two different shows at the same time (because of the overlap), so it's going to try and use both tuners to do so.

A friend of mine got tired of trying to balance the start and end times of Survivor and CSI, so he now records survivor and extends the record time 60 minutes. That way one tuner gets both shows and he doesn't miss anything. I'm thinking of doing the same..

An example would be if you had a timer recording for 8 pm to 9 pm but you start one minute early and end three minutes late. There is a previous timer recording for 7 pm to 8 pm. If both timers started one minute early and three minutes late then it would be recording 6 59 pm to 8 03 pm and 7 59 pm to 9 03 pm therefore causing an overlapping timer causing the second tuner to kick in for 4 minutes from 7 59 pm to 8 03 pm, due to the second timer firing early and the first timer ending later into the next show.

I hope this explains the situation better with the two tuners coming on.

Could this be described as a bug of sorts? Shouldn't the machine be smart enough to realize if it's recording 2 shows back-to-back on the same channel, to just keep recording?

i think you should do this instead of hoping the machine will. just an option though.

I am definitely not hoping the machine will -- there's no point -- it won't.
