A number of companies are stepping in to help out WSNet customers that will be impacted by the company's shutdown next week.

Kamputech, a New Jersey company providing analog and digital satellite solutions, said it entered into agreements with a number of providers to continue services on Telstar 6 and G4R satellites that have been delivered to WSNet customers. The company said it has contracts for encoding, uplinking and transmission, deals which will allow private and franchised cable operators to offer a complete digital programming package.

Kamputech's goal is to allow cable operators to continue using existing infrastructure without any changes in receivers or dishes, and without incurring additional capital expenditures, company executives said.

In addition, Comcast's HITS (Headend in the Sky) unit, which partnered with WSNet for a digital TV product delivered to MDUs and apartments and other private cable/network customers, has information on its Web site concerning conversion help for those impacted by the upcoming shutdown.

WSNet, the Austin, Texas, company that has been delivering satellite-based video services to MDUs and small and rural cable operators as well as operating a C-Band business, said it will cease operations on Feb. 28. In a letter sent to its customers, WSNet COO Stuart Lefkowitz said an inability to secure new funding forced the company to terminate operations.

WSNet's transmission contract for Loral's Telstar 6 satellite will be discontinued next week, and the company is actively shopping its C-Band business and other assets.
