Just purchased Phillips 47 inch 1080p LCD. I have been a long time customer of Direct TV. Any suggestion on HD options? I called them and they pitch 9.99 deal I also wanted DVR because my wife cannot do without her Tivo functions. We currently have 2 they wanted 199.00 for that I am looking into Comcast they just took over our cable here in Greenwood. I have no complaint with Direct TV just looking for quality and value.

Going to cable in my opinion will kill your quality and quantity and value for your tv viewing, especially in regards to hd. is the 199 per box, or for both.... Jump on it if they offered you 2 for 199... otherwise, you could always pick up the boxes for 169 at costco...

And how was the cable service before? If it was bad, don't expect anything different... That name change will not make your system better overnight, if ever...

I suggest finding out what channels they actually offer in HD and how much they charge for everything. I'm sure they have some great sighnup deal, but look at pricing after that promo ends, and how much they really charge for services, like DVR's (and how long do they record. Around here its about 20 hours, total of recording, and almost $9 a month per dvr) Then after you find out how much more they charge figure that amount over 2 years and then figure out how much Directv will cost you over the next 2 years with the 199 fee for the dvrs... If its anything like it is around here, in just dollars spent alone, cable will be way more expensive over the next 2 years than Directv would be, and that isn't even taking into account the much larger amount of channels that Directv offers in HD.... and sports packs, etc...

Welcome to the forums timbo1089. :)
It sounds like DirecTV offered you two HD DVRs for $199,is that correct? If that is correct, that's actually not a bad deal, considering the usual going price on these receivers are $200/each.The prices we are discussing are for leasing, not buying/owning them.Currently, there are two different HD DVRs that DirecTV offers. The model numbers are HR20 and HR21.The HR20 has OTA capability built into it,where the HR21 does not have the OTA capability built in.The only other differences that I know of at this time is that the HR20 is silver and the HR21 is black.Since the addition of the D10 satellite and all of the HD channels that have come online, they have really cut back on making any really good deals like they did in the past.

$199 would be a great price as its two DVR's for the price of one, and includes the HD Dish install. I wouldn't even think about downgrading to cable.

timbo,

:welcome_s

I'm in the same area as you and very happy with my DirecTV service, would never go back to cable. (off topic - I'm pretty unhappy with Comcast. I have them for internet and have seen a marked decrease in speeds since they took over Insight.)

Anyway, the $199 for two DVRs is a good deal. Also, I've had good luck with the local installtion company. One thing you need to be aware of is that WISH HD (8-1) is not currently carried on DirecTV. DirecTV and LIN-TV (which owns the station) have been unable to come to an agreement to carry that signal. Search the forums for LIN and you'll find plenty of details.

Also missing from the lineup is PBS- HD - which is not carried by DirecTV in most markets, although there is information that they have come to an agreement for carriage and just need to finalize things.

To recieve these two HD signals you'll need to put up an over the air antenna. (SD versions are carried.) You can run the signal straight to your TV, but obviously the DVR functions won't work. If you want to DVR those stations, you need to either obtain an HR20 (unlikely at this point) or wait until the OTA tuner for the HR21 series is released (should be soon) and buy that. This add on is called AM-21 and you can preorder it from some internet providers. Again, search the forum and you'll find lots of information on that.

If you understand accept these station limitations going in, I think you'll be very happy with DirecTV. Good luck!
