View Full Version : DHP 4 Receivers & want to add another receiver
I want to add another receiver to my DHP. I already have 4 and wonder what it would take.
I have a Dish 500 pointed @ 110 & 119. My receivers are a 508, 301, 301, 301. I don't know what exactly what is connected to the dish but four wires come off of it and feed into each receivers.
I get NY stations as my locals and have the option of getting a second dish installed for free. I only add this tidbit because any additional parts needed may be needed or not needed.
You could replace your legacy Quad LNB (if that is what you have) with a DishPro Twin LNB and run it to a DP-34. The output from your new dish (a dish 300 with a DishPro single LNB would also connect to the DP-34). The DP-34 has four outputs so you can only connect it to four tuners but it has (3) trunking outputs so you can connect more DP-34s. When you buy your new receiver (your 5th receiver) you will need to add the second DP-34.
When you call DISH to arrange for installation of your free dish tell them your plans for the future (adding another receiver) and maybe you can get your existing equipment upgraded at little or no charge. You should be aware that many of the CSRs and installers do not understand DishPro technology so you may have explain to them (or the installer that should call to arrange the appointment for installation) exactly what you will need.
Bill R's comments about DishPro equipment & the potential use of cascaded DP34 switches are absolutely correct.
But the simple, easy & cheap way to add another rcvr (and have the ability to add a 6th one later) is to buy a system with another Dish500 for only $50 more than the price of the stand-alone rcvr.
If you do opt for the free (now) 3rd dish with this arrangement the installer will not connect it to the 5th rcvr but if you've lived without it up to now you can probably survive without the other locals on the 5th TV.
The only problem I see is that every one has assumed you have a LEGACY QUAD. On your dish look at the LNBF the piece sticking out in front of the Dish if it has a stylized DP in black it is a DISH PRO Quad and you only need to add a DP-34 switch to it and you will have the capability of having 5 receivers with 119 & 110 and the second dish could be added on 4 receivers easily. The DP-34 has a suggested retail of $149.00.
Thanks I checked my dish and it turns out than it is a DISH PRO Quad LNBF. I really appreciate all your input on this matter. I am a newbie in the satellite arena and the learning curve was the the reason I was unable to distinguish the equipment apart.
If I got E* to install that second dish for free will they use a DP34? If they do what would I have to do to connect 5 receivers?

Really all you need is one DP34. Take the two inner outputs of the quad into the DP34, which will give you output to 4 receivers out of the DP34, leaving you 2 extra ports on your existing quad to connect up two more receivers giving you a total of 6 outputs.
If you get the second dish installed they will most likely use a DP34, but they will probably switch your quad for a twin and you would then need to purchase a second DP34 because you would no longer have the quad.
