Now the Summit County, Colo.-based DSL (digital subscriber line) service may be facing its biggest challenge yet, thanks to a decision Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission to deregulate parts of the high-speed Internet access industry.

Looks like James_F's DSL prediction will come true faster, although we have the FCC to thank for the speed increase, didn't see that one coming.

It will have to be the cable companies that keep DSL pricing in check. You know you are in trouble when you are looking for cable companies to keep another industry's prices in check.

DSL 7Mbps x 1Mbps, if you're sitting on top of the CO, $400-$700/month.

Cable modem 3Mbps x 256Kbps-1.5Mbps everywhere within the cable company's served town, $40-$60/month.

DSL bites by comparison, only the CLECs ever showed any intent to push it to its limits, and with the ILECs free to rampage, it's basically dead as far as actually competing with cable goes. Terrestrial wireless is going to most likely supplant DSL as the competition to cable high-speed data, and if the telecom industry treats it the same way, it will largely go bust the same way and cable will continue on its merry way.

Things are a bit more competative here $34.95 is the lowest price DSL package 384-1.5mbit/128 and 768-1.5mbit/256 is $44.95. Yes you can get 1.5-6.0mbit/384 for $159. (southwestern bell/yahoo)

Cable is $44.95 if cable customer $54.95 if you are not (road runner).

Just waiting for the green light that says I can get hooked up (somehow) to the fiber optic network here. When it becomes available it will be around $40 a month.
One of the other counties here that has just about all the homes hooked up offers 1 telephone line + 1mb internet service for $44/month. That's all over the fiber. They can get cable service over the fiber there too.

Fiber optics and wireless delivery is the future of internet, telephone, and media services. Copper wire isn't. :)

its still a commodity - supply and demand will dictate the price. for $400 / month I'll go back to dial up. For that price everyone would have a T-1 rather than DSL
