Is there such a thing as a sattelite ready tv? With the sattelite receiver built in much like a cable ready tv>
Yes there is, or atleast there was. They are made by RCA.

There are lots of sets, with Direct TV tuners. None I know of for Dish. I personally would stick to the STBs, as one can then take advantage evolving technology.

I have seen them for sale at both Best Buy and Circuit City. The TVs have a smartcard port on the back.
I don't think buying a TV with a bulit-in satellite receiver (or DVD or VCR or anything else) is a good idea. Technology changes (especially with satellite receivers). I have had satellite service a little over 5 years and I am on my third different satellite receiver model (same TV). Selling older receivers is usually quite easy. Selling a TV with a bulit-in OLD satellite receiver is a lot harder.

If it is no cost difference it probably is not a big deal, you can always hook up an external box and just ignore the built in tuner. I would not pay extra for a DBS ready unit.

Look at how far we have come, in terms of our choices for video sources. Previously, TV's would only be sold with a NTSC (or PAL or SECAM) tuner. Now they're being sold as monitors without an ATSC tuner, and you get an add on box of your choice, from your provider to receive your signal. The two satellite providers are offering HDTV boxes with built in OTA tuners, and cable TV providers provide OTA signals over the cable anyway.
This is natural evolution folks, and I hope that we do away completely with built in tuners in TV's. That way the sets can be made cheaper and I won't be paying for a tuner that I won't use, and opens the possibility for all sorts of video distribution tricks.

As long as it did not make the tv any bigger and cost any more then it would be alright, but if you had to pay extra for it then it would not be a good idea.

A couple of years ago RCA manufactured an HDTV set (39" diagonal, non-projection) with an integrated DTV/DirecTV tuner built in. It was sold through the usual big-box electronics stores for around $3000. Nice set...if you could afford it and/or wanted DirecTV over Dish.
I saw one at the good guys! in Lynwood, WA and was impressed.
