I got two malfunctioning HR10's on the cheap, to see if I could fix them. They were both at 6.3d. I upgraded them to 6.3f, and it made no difference.

Unit #1 works great, but with a periodic snap, crackle, pop sound in the audio. These audio defects are not "recorded into" the recording, as they don't occur in the exact same spot if I instant replay it.

Unit #2 has no audio issues, but gets real sluggish after running for about 15 minutes, until it eventually reboots. It runs reliably for a longer period if not hooked up to the satellite, but I think it still slows down. I will test that farther when it's disk gets done running in the diagnostic software.

Swapping drives between the two units has shown me that Unit #1's audio problem is in the hardware, as the audio problem remains, even with the other hard drive.

Unit 2's sluggishness is caused by the hard drive. It ran fine with the hard drive from unit 1, so I know I can make one good working box from these two. The strange thing, is the drive passed the WD diagnostic tests. Spinrite tests are currently pending. If it passes, I may try reimaging it.

Has anyone successfully attempted to repair the audio problems in an HR10? It isn't worth putting money in, or I'd send it to CCS. Has anyone tried to repair a hardware problem on these units?

What audio output(s) have you tried? Analog? Optical? HDMI?

Analog (composite). I don't yet have a tv that handles anything better than that.

I'm sitting here scratching my head, this audio problem was around years ago, don't recall how it was resolved, maybe by a software update. This had to be 2 or 3 years ago, dig in the archives and see what you find.

You're probably remembering the "kazoo audio" problem. That was usually fixed by resetting the Tivo.

In this particular instance, I do not believe it is a software problem. Swapping disks between two of them shows the audio problem stays with the same unit, not the disk, which to me says hardware problem.

Can you describe the "Kazoo audio problem"?

What I recall was crackling and pops at random times exactly as the OP has mentioned. I could recall skipping back and not hearing it at the same spot I originally heard it. I've only used an optical connection and if I recall it did not happen on the analog outs.
