My Father got an HDTV for Christmas. He initially wanted to get a Blu-Ray or HD DVD Player, but I told him to wait awhile and see what happens with the format war.
Now that it's over, he can go ahead and buy a Blu-Ray player. He's not very technical though, so I get the job of researching lol
I see that when you play certain movies, the player may require an update. Are these included right on the disc?

All Blu-ray movies will play on all Blu-ray players. The 2.0 update is for advance interactive features for the kids with their Playstations. I don't even know or care if the update is available for my Samsung BP-1400. I don't have any interest downloading games and ringtones, chatting online, etc. If you just want to watch the movie and the documentaries, no update is needed.

Edit: Btw, that was a good suggestion to wait for the format war to end. He will really enjoy the Blu-ray player, as the movies look fantastic. The player will also play his DVD's and upscale them for the HDTV. You can rent the Blu-ray movies from both Netflix and Blockbuster. And when purchasing, try shopping online at amazon.com for the movies. You can often save up to $10 per title from what they are charging at most stores. And if you don't see a movie you like, chances are it will be released in the not too distant future as the studios are really starting to ramp up production now that the format war is over.

Recently I purchased the LG BH-200 combo player as I have both HD DVDs and Blu Rays in my collection. Its another great machine and would have been a recommendation if he had had any HD DVDs prior to. I bought it to make some space for one and because LG says it can be made profile 2.0 after a software upgrade. Coming from HD DVD and their interactivity of the discs profile 2.0 is an absolute must for me.

Isn't there something about a newer disc possibly requiring newer DRM than is originally on the player?

I have requested from Mrs. Smiddy for my birthday a BH-200 as DCSholtis has...based on everything I've read it is ready for anything and can be updated with audio codecs as well. There is a Samsung player that is dual as well, but I have yet to confirm it is upgradeable to BluRay 2.0 profile.
