I am just about to buy a HDTV (finally!) and have just about settled on the Toshiba 32AV500U. I can get it from either NewEgg or TigerDirect for $679.99 with free shipping. It has all the features I need and will go nicely with the HR21 in the living room. I only have one concern. IIRC, there might be a compatability issue with DirecTV remotes, specifically with the TV Power On/Off function. AS I recall, the TV Power On/Off doesn't function with most Toshiba TVs. Am I correct in this, or am I just suffering from a "Senior moment"?

It only functions for me in tv mode, but it does function there.

That's what I thought, but the deal is so good I'm not going to pass it up. Perhaps DirecTV will come up with a workaround or a new code set that will be compatible.

I have all toshiba TV's in my house.
I bought the 32 inch toshiba and picked up my regular remote and it worked just fine
I ended up taking the 32av500u back because for some reason this TV seems so small. The pricepoint is very good and the picture on my HR21 looked extremely good.
I had to laugh because at first I thought the TV was fine sizewise. I got it for my wife as a surprise. She walked in and the first thing she said was wow that looks small.
 Who would have ever thought the woman would have a problem over the TV size compared to a man.

One thing that I dreaded about this particular TV was that it had no input labeling or hiding. You had to remember what devices are on what connection. All you get is the generic HDMI1 ,HDMI2, Video1, etc. Also you cant hide the inputs that arent being used so it can be a nuisance to flip through all 9-10 inputs trying to reach the one you need. This may not be a big issue for most but being spoiled on my other LCD's with these features I couldnt stand it. I luckily ran out to Circuit City on just a look trip and they amazingly had a closeout (last 1 in stock - new in box) 37hl67 Regza Toshiba for $799 (normally a $999 TV) so I snatched that one up and replaced the 32AV500U

I have a Toshiba 37HL67 Regza. The RC 34 with RF that I use turns the TV on/off in both TV mode and D* mode.

The Regza owners could you get the white remotes to control the tv volume? The majority of the Regza sets are not compatible with white remotes, at least the volume isn't. Reason the white remotes add an extra signal to each volume press, making it unrecognizable to the regzas. You can't turn off the extra signal, so theres no way to fix this, unless abandon the tv volume and use your av receivers volume instead.

The white remotes haven't changed, its the toshiba that have become more sensitive to the signals it accepts.

I have both the 37 and 32 Regza and dont have a problem with the volume controls on any remote for either tv. So I am not sure what the problem may be. It is possible that as you run down the list of codes to program the remote you are stopping on a code that has limited functions. I think I had that issue with a previous TV. Its possible that more then one of the program codes works for a TV you just have to find out which code works better (most of us probably stop at the first code that does anything cause it did something)

First I do not own this model of tv, but there have been dozens of threads on this subject both here, directv remote forums, and Remotecentral, going back two years which I have had to deal with.

Another thing is the toshiba volume commands between codes do not change at all. On non-white directv remotes they're the same between codes on the remote. And on white directv remotes they're the same between codes.

But if you take a code from non-white directv remote and compare it to toshiba code on white directv remote, thats where they're different. The differene is extra signal ALL white Directv remotes add to every volume command from every brand of tv's code.

I tried two different RC34s on my 37" Regza. One has RF the other is IR only. Both controlled the TV volume fine.
