Just took a look at the improved D* website. Pretty slick, and a whole lot easier to navigate. Great job D*!!
One concern, if you go to My Account --> Account Details on the right hand side it has a "Credit Card" section. Granted all but the last 4 digits of the credit card are visible, and it does not show the expiration date (unless you select "Update"). All in all no big deal, but I have never entered any credit card info into the D* web site, and only once have I given a CSR my credit card info to lease a new receiver, and that was 8 months ago.
I've tried to zero out the credit card info and was given this message "Saved credit card information is used for automatic payments or one-time payments and purchases.". I can understand the automatic payments, but why hold onto the info for one time payments and purchases? Doesn't one time mean one time and not reoccurring??
Not be a fear monger, and I'm sure D* has great security for its DB servers, but this is how people are able to steal identities and credit card info.

Just checked mine and it shows "No credit card info".
I just checked first you have to log in and it gives last four digits no ex. date.I think it gives last four so you know what card you are using. I would not worry about it.

I am fairly sure it has always been this way. At least as long as I can remember at the least.

I ran into this a long time ago - tried to delete the card information since it was expired and we don't use the card any more anyway. They said it did not matter (WTH?) and I said it did, we got to arguing and it was never removed. I, like you never entered it, and my account is paid by direct debit to my checking and has been for 8 (EIGHT) years. Service is going down and prices up is all I can say.

does it really matter? I'm guessing you carry around your credit cards with you...they can be stolen that way as well. When you use your card at the gas station, grocery store and every other place your card information is stored somewhere. Credit cards have this thing called fraud protection as well...so, I wouldn't worry about it all.

If you upgrade a receiver (even if it's free), purchase something (like a remote) on the web site, or do anything else that triggers a programming commitment, DirecTV requests a credit card number. They use the credit card to get their money in the event you cancel service while you still have a commitment, do not return leased equipment after you disconnect it, or generally owe them money.
Due to the number of deadbeats in the world today, this was necessary and much cheaper for DirecTV than trying to track down someone and try to get the money using a collection agency or wage garnishment. In fact, NEW DirecTV customers must provide a valid credit card number in order to get service in the first place.
