I am planning on using RF to control my H-21 because the receiver will be located behind my LCD TV. Will I be able the program the remote with IR ,for the LCD and RF into the receiver on the same remote, provided in the H-21 box.

In RF mode, any peripherals other than the Directv receiver are still controlled via IR.

are you sure? I thought putting the remote into RF inactivates all IR functions

bobnielsen is correct. Other devices are still controlled via IR. Think about it this way, most televisions don't have RF remote capability. However, you don't want to keep the TV remote around all the time to change the volume of the television. The D* remote uses IR to control the television volume while using RF for communicating with the D* box itself.

Yep, that is how I use my HR20. I have a Harmony 880 for my HR21.

If the D* box is told to communicate with the D* remote via RF, cal I still use a different remote (Harmony 880) to talk to the box via IR? If yes, I can have the D* box and D* remote (wife's) talk via RF and my Harmony to talk to the D* via IR using IR repeaters.

Sorry but no. Its either RF or IR, not both.

But apparently only because of DirecTV's software design limitations, not because of any hardware limitations. The R15s used to respond to both RF and IR simultaneously, until the software team "fixed" it.

The r15 can still accept both IR & RF at the same time, but not if you turn on the RF mode through the menu of the R15, then its one or the other. So to get the a R15 accepting both again, switch back to IR, then reset the receiver, it will now be in a state like it never was but into RF mode before. Now you just attach the RF antenna, and marry the RF remote to the receiver.

I currently have an RC24 remote in RF mode which controls an H20-100 in my basement. I have a 20 inch Sharp LCD in my kitchen. I want to add an RC34 remote in RF mode, while keeping the RC24 available...........can someone give me a "step by step" for this?

Watch your heat! "behind an LCD TV" is a very warm place. I hope your planning includes decent ventilation.

(that means either 2 open sides, or a dedicated fan)

I have a single HR20 feeding every TV in the house. (one via HDMI, one via Component, and the rest via svideo over RF modulator through the wall jacks)
I have 4 RC34 remotes, one for each of the TVs. They are all set to RF mode. (didn't have to bother with the receiver ID stuff, they just worked) Each one also controls it's TV via IR just fine.
