The D* web site states that the remote has back lit keys, "even in low light" it states. All of my remotes are model# RC64R. How do you get the lights to work? The last reciever I got is an HR21-200. It has the same remote model# as all my other ones. Whats up with this?

I think the remote with backlighting is the RC64RB. It's got translucent keys instead of opaque ones:

Drew is right, the RC64RB is the backlit version. I think all backlit remote model numbers end in a B (could be wrong about that).

DirecTV's web site has the manuals for all their remotes (as well as most all their hardware). This should let you compare them and figure out if you want to buy the backlit version.

Drew, Thanks for that. I really need the lighted one for my Master. I am tired of hitting the wrong keys while in the bed:grin:

I guess I will email D* to confirm. One of mine will not operate my Onkyo in RF mode at all. I have tried everything. My others work with it just fine. Maybe I will ask them very nicely to send me one of those as a replacement.

Mine says RC64R, what is the RC64? While at Costco yesterday they hade some HR21-700's, the remotes said they had RC64 on the top right, mine says RC64R. Do you know the difference?

Now read my thread about my cabinet temp and give me some tips. Your pretty sharp for being a Yorkerrr! Just kidding my friend. You know us southern boys, were wild and sometimes not the sharpest:lol:

The RC64R is IR/RF while the RC64 is IR only. Add the B, RC64RB and you have a IR/RF, backlit remote. :)

Mike, Thats what I was guessing, but wouldnt the HR21-700 come with a RF type remote? I thought it did?

You would expect it to come with a RF remote.

Did you see the actual remote at Costco or what is on the HR21-700 box? The outside labeling could just have the generic RC64.

It could just be whatever is in the supply chain at the time the units are boxed but I don't know for sure.

Mike, It was on the box. You make a valid point though. They had about 20 of them all stacked up in boxes. I remember when I was looking for mine they were out of them. I ended up getting mine at BB. They had they 700 and the 200. I picked up out the 200. Saw fewer complaints about that one on here. However, I have come to believe that the 700 is more "out there" in peoples home. Kinda skews the #s a little!

FWIW, I've picked up two HR21-700s in the past week. One at my local Best Buy which depicted a remote on the box with NO model number. Inside was an RC-64R. The second one was at my local Costco last week. The box showed an RC-34, but when I opened it at home, it contained an RC-64R, which coincidentally didn't work in IR mode.

That resulted in a 49 minute call to DirecTV to get a replacement sent to me free of charge. I pretty much had to threaten to take both machines back, along with canceling my service (I've been a DirecTV customer since 1997, have the "protection" plan, and already had 7 DVRs active on my account) before "Mr. Kevin" agreed that I was due a functioning RF and IR remote on my brand-new DVR.

My local Best Buy has the RC-64RB (backlit) remote in stock for $20.00

Update 5/6/08

I received my new remote via FedEx overnight...and bless their little hearts...they sent me the RC-64. So now I have a remote that only works via IR, and another remote that only works via RF...and it seems that never the twain shall meet, unless I buy it myself.

This broken remote, it doesn't control anything via IR? Like TV or Stereo? If its does, then it will control the directv receiver too.

If its in IR mode in the directv device and it doesn't control the HR21, its probably set to the wrong IR code. try the following:

1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1
