I'm very happy with these in an Antec MX-1 case.

+1
I read many threads before buying. Best way to go is the Antec MX-1. Some prefer seagate, others western digital. I have the WD. I think it is more popular. There are posts about the seagates being noisy.

I run two WD's in the Antec enclosures and have had no problems since they have been in service. I did get a faulty WD drive to start with, but WD replaced it.

I use the Cavalry that was recommended in another thread - here's the link to it on buy.com http://www.buy.com/prod/cavalry-1tb-dual-interface-usb-2-0-esata-external-hard-drive/q/loc/101/205986373.html I've been very satisfied with it.

Think carefully.
I initially bought the Cavalry enclosure which came with a WD 1TB drive. Worked great. Once I got that sucker filled up to 80% full, I started to re-think the whole deal. I purchased another esata 750GB drive, and the enclosure detailed below.
I am running both the 1TB plus the 750GB as one big drive, as this suits my needs.
Very happy with the VenusDS3R Pro. Quiet and cool.
I have around 90 movies recorded with about 78% available space, which I will need with football season just around the corner.

I am using the same setup on a pair of HR20-100s and believe the WD drives are quiet and cool in the Antec MX-1 case.

+1 This replaces a Segate Free Agent Pro and is a much better solution. Running with at WD 1TB drive.

When I did an internal drive replacement, I put the old internal drive (a WD 320 GB drive) in a Kingwin enclosure, and it works fine on my HR20-100 hooked up as an external eSATA drive.
The Kingwin enclosure includes the eSATA cable and it is on sale this week at Frys for $22....

I don't know why the black one is listed for $5 less ($16.99) on the web site.. all three are identical except for the color (I have the black one).
EDIT: Today's FRY's add lists the in-store price at a few dollars cheaper than the $22 online price (but still more than the $16.99 online price for the one unit).
My theory is that the 3rd-party guys like Weaknees and DVRUpgrade have already "reinvented the wheel" and done all of the grunt work to avoid the pitfalls that might arise. Unless you really WANT a DIY setup because you are a tinkerer and are willing to risk the landmines that this might bring, I strongly recommend going that route.
You could snap up a bargain-bin drive from Fry's for $129, but the 1 TB from Weaknees, which once topped a grand, is now below $400. Personally, I hate nothing more than the potential of missed recordings, so I think it is good insurance and worth the potentially avoided aggravation of DIY to spend the extra bucks. That's a COMPLETELY different theory than spending big bucks on Monster cables or service contracts, which I normally frown on. The extra bucks actually buy you a fully-vetted HDD in this case, while DIY can be pot luck. The forums are littered with posts of stuttering recordings, failed recordings, deleted recordings, and worse, many in setups where bargain-bin drives were installed.
PVR drives need continuous medium throughput, while conventional computer drives might have spectacularly-impressive burst throughput numbers (which isn't important) which is what they are designed for, but can also still have spotty continuous throughput. If throuput drops instantaneously, thats a picture breakup, or a reboot, or a missed or partial recording. IOW, even an expensive super-fast drive like a Raptor can perform poorly in a DVR, while a cheaper one, as long as it is designed for streaming media such as those sold by Weaknees, will do a better job. The problem is that the Weaknees drive is still more expensive than DIY drives, but who really knows the magic formula of what drives work the best besides them?
You could get lucky. Or maybe not so much.
I got a Weaknees 1 TB last month, and it works flawlessly. I can move between drives simply by either powering down the 1 TB and rebooting, or powering up the 1 TB, waiting 30 seconds, and rebooting (no need to disconnect cables and power from the drive or the DVR). But it was $400.
Last I heard this is the drive that Weaknees is selling:

It's a 1TB Western Digital drive meant for Consumer Electronics use. I've been running two of them. One in a HR21-200 and the other in an HTPC without any issues for a couple of months now.
$400 for a drive you can buy for $240 is a nice markup.

Thanks for this info about the Kingwin enclosure..Will check it out tomorrow in my local Frys. btw, the online price though it shows $16.99 shows up as $22 in the cart

You can also get it at buy.com. Note that this is the drive WD suggests for DVR use. WD10EVCS instead of the much more common desktop computer drive WD10EACS. It is also labeled a "green" drive, for low-power operation, if that matters to you. It is supposed to be very quiet (and mine is).

I actually have one of each. They're both equally quiet and have both proved to be equally reliable and able to handle recording two live streams, DoD and playback simultaneously.
Both are labeled as green drives and appear to have pretty much identical specs. The cost is so close though...no reason not to get the "V" version for DirecTV use.
There are several vendors that carry the drive...I just chose Provantage because of price at the time.

That's the one I have. It's rock solid.
