How will so-called "cable ready" TVs be affected by the switch ti digital? Will everybody need a box of some type (or digital TV) or will the cable companies send analog through coax?

I can't put my finger on the document or date now, but I remember that cable will continue to deliver analog signals for a few years after the broadcast transition.

Cable companies are not effect by the Feb 2009 cutoff date. Cable companies will continue to send analog cable signals, there is a cut off date years in the future. However, you said "cable ready", not "connected to cable".
If the TV is "cable ready", but receives OTA broadcast signals (not hooked up to cable), it will need a digital converter.

for the umpteenth time..the analog cutoff is OVER THE AIR ONLY
it does not affect cable or satellite
If you have cable right now (even analog cable) nothing changes
if you have satellite (Dish, Direct, Free to air) nothing changes
if you have a OTA antenna, then you have to have a digital decoder either through the TV or one of the converter boxes
