Can I use a component video cable as an old fashioned audio (L/R) and video (yellow) cable? I need to connect a non S-VCR to a tv and all I have is a component video cable.

Not sure. I don't think it would hurt anything to just try it and see what happens.

Yes, it will work fine. On a well-made component cable, the lines will be of better construction than an audio cable (better shielding, for example), but will work just fine.

To be technical, both types are a set of three coax cables with RCA-style fittings on them. The internal construction of the cables are identical, though component video cables are typically more robust and the jackets/fittings are colored differently to match the sockets on component video inputs. If you really wanted to, you could do the reverse and use the A/V triplet (composite video and stereo audio) for component video, though I wouldn't recommend it for very long runs since the cables are generally cheaply made.

You won't have any problems using a component cable as an A/V triplet substitute the way you describe. Go forth in confidence.
