"It's just entertainment, it's just entertainment, it's just entertainment..."

So I kept telling myself as I got angrier at the judges. Now, I'm not a ballroom dancer and I completely admit that I don't understand the technical aspects of ballroom dancing. I'm in no position to question any of the three esteemed members of the panel on anything, really.

However, I'm a big believer in fair competition and this is the part of the season where the competition doesn't seem fair. In past seasons the judges were too quick to give out 10/10/10 scores, essentially setting up a popularity contest for America to pick. This season they seem to be completely out in left field. As I said, they've got the technical stuff... but they weren't judging on technique. Honestly I don't know what Ms. Inaba was judging on. I'm tempted to say, not enough sleep (but that would be disrespectful.)

Ms. Yamaguchi is, in my opinion, dancing at a professional level. She does moves that seem more at home in the Macy's segments. She's smooth and fluid and expressive. She doesn't over-emote as I think some professionals do, but I think she's fantastic. I could see giving her a slightly lower score to encourage competition, and I'll allow the judges that.

I must say the same for Mr. Taylor. He has come a long way and while he's no professional, he is so athletic and so focused that he can do a great job. He doesn't have the technique but he does deliver on the choreography he's got. I think his dances focus a bit too much on Ms. Sliwinska and not enough on him though. Sometimes he skips a step or doesn't move at all while she twirls around. But, I think that's normal for ballroom dancing and I think his scores were fair too.

My reality check bounced when I saw the scores for Mr. de la Fuente's tango, though. This would have been a good dance a month ago but for the final five show it was boring, slow and devoid of passion. Mr. de la Fuente deserves to be judged on his merits, not on his arm. His footwork, his choreography, none of this was affected by his arm and they were not up to par. I felt the heavy hand of the producers here, trying to make sure that the show doesn't lose its Latina audience, and that is the only sense I can make of his scores. As for the lifts, they came off as a stunt and didn't enhance the performance. I could see doing one to prove he could do it but they were not "in the character of the dance."

All due respect, giving Mr. de la Fuente the lead seemed like a cheap stunt.

"Mario's" jive was a complete disaster to me for being this late in the competition. The judges forgave what seemed to me (and even to them) to be a sloppy effort, out of character, and "flat-footed" (their words). This is the sort of dancing they would have torn apart another dancer for. I am at a loss to understand his scores.

And now we come to Ms. Winokur. I really wish she had been dancing at this level three or four weeks ago. I think she does a great job but her dancing isn't up to where it needs to be for the finals. The judges were honest in their scoring here. If only Mr. Dovolani had given her a bit more challenging moves earlier in the show, who knows?

Don't forget to tune in at 8PM (go ahead, don't worry about that "other" show, you won't miss anything ;)) If you think you might want to switch to Fox, just put a Coke in front of you and say "dog" a lot. That ought to do it. Looks like a fun-filled show, just what ABC needs for sweeps, and maybe it will bring my blood pressure down.

I think De la Fuente should have bowed out last week, allowing Miss Elizabeth a shot at redemption.

On the other hand, the audio this week was the best I remember. Is anyone at ABC studios a DBSTalker or is it a coincidence?

There's an article (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117985135.html?categoryid=3070&cs=1) on DWTS in yesterday's Variety that I found interesting that begins: Is "Dancing With the Stars" really a Martian landing and "The Lawrence Welk Show" rolled into one?

Now on to my not so humble observations about last night. "It's just entertainment, it's just entertainment, it's just entertainment..."Sadly, that's become our mantra also.Don't forget to tune in at 8PM (go ahead, don't worry about that "other" show, you won't miss anything ;)) If you think you might want to switch to Fox, just put a Coke in front of you and say "dog" a lot. That ought to do it. Looks like a fun-filled show, just what ABC needs for sweeps, and maybe it will bring my blood pressure down. With 4 DVRs we get to watch all this terrific stuff.

We really don't favor any of them which is unusual at this point. Even Ms. Yamaguchi looks like an experienced amature ballroom competitor, not yet ready for the pros. On one of her "turns" her feet were positioned just like an Olympic skater - wrong for dancing. And while technically she's the best of the bunch, Mario is the only one fun to watch if you ignore his technical weaknesses.

Mr. Taylor's scores were fair? I think the scoring is a joke and it is oriented to the producer's goals. It is time for Ms. Winokur to go, but the scoring raw numbers when taken in comparative context are not consistent with anything I've ever seen. Yeah, I know, its just entertainment....

Truthfully, I think everyone stepped it up in the performances last night. Mario and Winokur danced the best they ever have, and Christian compensated (or I should say, the choreography did) for his limited arm movement, but once again, Kristi was without a doubt the most fun to watch for me. For the first time this season, I used two different phones to vote for her - I don't want fan complacency to knock her out!

Stuart mentioned improved audio, I think last night was probably also one of the best nights for musical selections this season. Indeed, you would think someone from ABC is reading our posts, but I have seen comments on the music all aronud the 'net... :)

Just finished the results show, and I'm not surprised that Mario left ...

I'm more surprised at the turnout of "Stars" for the 100th show! Tom Bergeron got to speak to a few, but he didn't even approach another dozen at the other end of the first row, including Mark Cuban, Joey Lawrence, Jane Seymour, Albert Reed, Ian Ziering, and more I probably missed.

I really enjoyed the "Top 10 Perfect Dances", and when it started I knew Drew and Cheryl's Free Style would be in there, along with Mario and Karina's Tango. During Mario Lopez' season, I thought he could be a professional dancer, and he's almost there with his stint in A Chorus Line. The guy can dance...

Did anyone watch this AND watch American Idol? Rascal Flats was on two live shows tonight - in the audience at Idol, then performing less than an hour later on DWTS. Weird! (Also weird to have Paula Abdul saying on DWTS that she loves the show!)

FYI, DWTS and AI tape in adjacent studios, so it wasn't too hard for Rascal Flats to be on both. I guess it's a real cluster down there on Tuesdays when they are both on.

Looks to me like Christian definitely got "sympathy votes" from the judges this week. I wonder what his scores would have been had he not been injured? And, with a few exceptions, I thought Mario was starting to get better. Kristi and Jason get my votes so far although I probably miss some of Jason's moves now and then (Ms. Sliwinska and her costumes seem to get in the way).

I too was surprised by Tom's seeming to ignore many of the returning "stars" on the front row. So many of these productions seem to be consistently running short on time... probably from "stars" plugging their books, movies, etc. Or in the case of AI, Paula Abdul's lengthy and confusing comments (although I get the impression that someone is pushing her to be more coherent lately). As for the audio tonight, AI audio seemed entirely flat... my subwoofer didn't even turn on. However, when I played back DWTS, the sub and system seemed to come alive.

They should have done a 2 hour 100th show extravaganza instead of running whatever recrap show that was on at 8:00.

Did anyone else think it seemed like the edited Paula Abdul's comment. Almost sounded like she was going to say "but it is not as good as American Idol" but hte edited it out. :)
