will DirecTV cancel my account because there's no longer a landline phone in my house?

I have been using cell phones exclusively in my house for domestic and international calls. One cell phone is for local calls only, while the other
one is for international only(unlimited free minutes on both). I discconected
the landline about 6 months ago when I got the unlimted int'l calling plan
on my call phone.

I currently still have 4 Tivo-based DVRs, 1 HR20, and 2 HR21s. The Tivo units
showing me on-screen messages every single day.(like "you receiver has not
made a call in the last 572 days...") It's annoyuing, but I can live with that.

However, I have scheduled a Directv tech to come to my house in a few days
and I wonder what will happen if he sees no landline phone...

tell Directv that you no longer have land lines. all they will do is cancel the ability to make PPV purchases using your remote.

I have NEVER ordered any PPVs since I got DirecTV back in 1997, so I should
be safe?

The DirecTV Plus HD DVR HR2x series doesn't require a phone line if the unit is connected to the internet.

The DirecTV Plus HD DVR HR2x series doesn't require a phone line if the unit is connected to the internet.

Clarification:

doesn't require a phone line to order ppv if it's connected to the intergoogle. It doesn't require a phone line at all for normal operation.

All the replies above are correct, however I need to warn you about one thing with your TiVos. Please delete the "nag" messages you get as you get them, if you are not doing so yet. If too many build up in the DVR's "Inbox", it will cause your Tivo to run erratically and/or lock up. At that point, you're looking at a reset that will either delete all your season passes and programming info or will clear and delete everything.

I haven't had a landline in over 5 years. The HR20/21s can connect via the Internet and do everything the landline did.

As for the tech visiting your house, not sure why he would even care about your phone line unless that's a problem. Don't even mention it. If you're worried about it then just plug a phone line into the back of the receiver and plug it into your phone jack or run it into a closet or something. He'll see it and think nothing of it.

Wow, that means the on-screen Caller ID doesn't work. I guess you have to pick up your mobile phone and look at the display to see who is calling. Yikes!

Doesn't DirecTV require a wireline connection if you order one of their sports subscription packages like NFL ST or NASCAR Hot Pass?

Yes, but DirecTV has not been enforcing the requirement.

won't he need the phone line to have it call in to TiVo to activate and update that was downloaded?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There should be a sticky on the subject of phone lines. The title of the sticky should be in bold letters, "No, you don't need a phone line". Then maybe this topic won't need to be rehashed every other day.

Turn to channel 201 and listen carefully. "You require a land-based phone line for your receiver to function properly".

"Function properly" probably means the ability to order PPV from the remote, and the ability of the receiver to report viewing habits back to DirecTV.

Yes, the agreement says a phone line is required, but this is not enforced.

The HRs don't even have to be plugged into the net.
You can order PPV thru the web site, I think since I don't do PPV.

The only time any of my receivers has been connected to a phone line was my R10 when it was activated. Other than that, I have never had any of my receivers in 6 years of service. My HR20 and HR21 have been connected to the internet on an intermittent basis since that became a possibility.

Whats a landline. One of my receivers hasn't had a landline for almost 5 years. Don't need it. I added landline to other receiver for CID, but CID hasn't worked for me.
