Hey guys, this is directed directly at installers.
i have a small business that i do after hours and weekends. i do alot communications work, home theater and low voltage cabling. i have noticed there are some openings in my area for both Dish and Directv tecnicians. i am insterested in doing some part time installs. i have a couple of questions.
1) how do they pay techs; by the hour, by the job?
2) kinda personal; how much do they typically pay (ballpark not exact)?
thanks for your time.
I am not an installer, but information that has been posted here (in these forums) by installers indicates that most are paid by the # of receivers installed. Depending on the particular HSP that you work for, it can be a tough way to make money. If you are a contracted installer (as opposed to an employee) you are also picking up all the incidental expenses (such as gas).
Hopefully someone who is familiar with the HSP operations in your area can give you more specific information.

Where I'm at and at my rate:
$35 for the dish and 1st box
$15 for each additional box
$10 for KA/KU dish
$15 for service calls
If your in the home theater/low voltage business, I'd suggest looking into being a dealer/contractor straight with DirecTv. I know that DirecTv pays the HSP much, much more than what I see. But there are so many stops on that money train, there isn't a whole lot left by the time it gets to me.
If you don't want to go the dealer route, you could also contact perfect 10 about being a reseller/installer through them.
Just something you could tack on to your theater biz.

what about if you have to run RG6 ? from some of the places i have seen satelite installed, i would imagine its a major pain to run the cables. use to 5-10 years ago i used to have to crawl under houses alot :( . now a days with alot of people doing "structured cabling" in newer homes and remodels its got to make it easier. but i am sure there are still alot of bad homes for an installation.
i prewired my house when we built it 6 years ago. when the Diretv tech came to do my install back in December, he said it was a technicians dream. i had all the locations cabled w/ RG6 and cat5 (for telephone or network) so all his time was spent mounting the dish.
thanks for the info , i haven't considered that route. but i wonder if the companies (like perfect 10) would be interested in a part time tech (weekends and after 5pm).
You may want to talk to local home builders about prewiring the homes they build. If you're looking for part time, they could let you do your part of the work after the other contractors and workers are done for the day.

Let us know how it goes man. I really wanna know if you succeed.
Where I am at part time option is not possible. Some days are 12-16 hours (work + drive). But I imagine some places tech dont need to drive and that means pay depends on how fast one works.

My pay will sound higher than Roberts, but I pay for all my materials (cable, connectors, ground wire etc etc etc), vehicle expenses, gas, cell phone. I have absolutely 0 benefits.
Standard Install
$65 1 box
$80 2 box
$93 3 box
$105 4 box
$125 5 box
$15 each additional
Ka/Ku install
$95 first box
$15 each additional
$15 additional lines for dvr
$35 service call
The real trick will be finding a way to do this job part time. Since rio started scheduling us my office refused to schedule me nights only or mornings only like i wanted so that I could attend school.

Unfortunately those are the real rates. :(
As poor as it is, considering the local economy, it's better than most available jobs.

Not meant to be demeaning in any fashion.
Spoken reality.
The company name that fits the above description as IT WAS directed
at the place YOU work, Not you as an individual.
My above references are fact pertaining to them and their conglomerated other names and offices. .
My insinuations and "all out shock factor" to bring reality Loud IS exactly as your link displays a challenge for EVERY SINGLE ONE of you HSp guys back to 2004 in most cases to go get your Money BACK through the class action suits (if there is not one near you , make a call to a sizable lawfirm and within no time there be another), And to organize and Stand up.
The Charge back comment.. well yes.. it says it all in one short sentence.
It IS the common practice and they know it. Just run over, if they stand up threaten them and fire them. = We rule.. Federal law has no matter.
I commend you IF f you people up there are going to Bring fight for "the wrong to make it right", in your specific case this is NOT the first time as we both know and my references above i that post ARE tied specifically to where YOU recieve your check indirectly or directly and in some instances from your specific location. YOU and others around up there is if were to read between the lines. Now may have the experience to MAKE IT happen because now you know what to expect. Brother you cant half ass it and not at all.
These people sunk hundreds of thousands of dollars to prevent it already.
The pregnant wife thing.. Symbolizes exactly what type people these are.
Just ruthless racketeers in my book.
Brother , the thing is real real "dark" to say the least from my perspective in looking at anything that is supposed to resemble in the slightest Ethical Biz of any shape or form. Hideous in descriptive nature to even think such.
Nation wide common practice for all Home service providers of the nations number one programing provider.
I wish you well (teamsters), and good luck. Take this challenge maybe and ALWAYS be a leader, not a follower and let a little RESENTMENT become emotion.. while walking this fight... let that spread within those who are continually robbed and raped from their homes tables...
THEN... You Have something that WILL NOT be over ran
Dig in the gut man!.. and think of principle FIRST!
It not about a dollar, its not about a job.. its about the simple difference between what is ethically right and wrong.
MAKE IT A FIGHT! ;)

I get:
$65 for 1 box
then
$20 for each addition reciever
$25 for dvr's
$12 for Ka/Ku dishes
$21.70 for service calls
My 5 box yesterday (4 dvr's 1 standard) worked out to $160
I don't pay for materials, and i get reimbursed for fuel( Although it isn't enough, Paid $4/gal yesterday)
I work for an HSP also. We tried to organize our shop here but got shot down misserably. Now everyone is back complaining about the situation but they had the chance.
But I do belive my pay structure will dramatically change here in a couple months. That is when D* will be talking over my company.

One of the things that we have here that is helping save our paychecks is that every install is kaku and a round. So one box installs are $65.

I am involved in a class action against B&A. I imagine there are class action suits going on against most of the HSPs right now. Working as an HSP sub does suck, but like Robert, my options are limited. I've quit twice thus far, and will quit for the 3rd (and final) time mid June.

Yeah, that is the one I'm in on. I don't really expect to get anything out of it, nor do I care. I'm just glad someone is suing them and that I was able to put my name down as a participant. At this point I'm just glad they're going to lose money in the litigation, whether or not I benefit.

I work for an independent dealer and get
80 / 20 for standard
90 / 20 for Ka/Ku / International
+20 for second ODU
Only do installs. No crappy upgrades or service calls.
And no back charges for onsite and other far fetched stupidity.

You cannot work for that. Quit before your money runs out.
I get $80.00 for the first receiver and $20,00 for each additional box + I charge $60.00 for the first hour and $40.00 for each additional hour for custom work. I get a commission for any new sales also. Even at these rates it is not enough money it is not enough.
Service calls can require a complete rebuild.......all you have to loose is your chains..tell that HSP to shove it!

I'd hope they'd go to a hybrid. I'd dare say the proper pay for an installer is roughly the current per-job rate PLUS minimum wage hourly.

YIKES! this is almost exactly what I made 5 years ago starting out.
($35 went to $45 after 90 days for 1st box, additional boxes $12.25 $15 for service calls went to $20 after 90 days, ka/ku did not exist)
...free company van stocked with minimal tools and ladders, all the random parts and cable I needed (but I still ended up buying stuff like u-bolts and drywall screws), and a company gas card.
I hope you get the company van and gas card!
I will say, the HSP did provide insurance (not cheap), fleet maintentence, warehouse workers, job routers, and the like....and $10 a day for training new guys.

Find other things to do.
Run ads that state you will fix the FREE installation! Charge at least $60.00 per hour.......if that is not enough charge more. The HSPs are so far behind on service due to crappy installations they won't answer their phones. AND they have finally screwed most experienced techs so they have to train a new crop every week or so.
Just walk away.
Joe
