View Full Version : is this possible?

Hello

I didn't want to call DISH and ask this question for obvious reasons but I wanted to know if anyone knew how this works.  My boyfriend and I are going to be living in different states for about a year before he finally moves back out to where I'm moving.  We currently have two DISH 301 receivers on one account.

I would like to know if it would be possible for me to leave him with one of my receivers and be able to have him use the receiver here in Atlanta and for me to be able to use it at home in Portland, Oregon.  In other words, I'd like to be able to maintain just the one account but be able to use it at two different locations at the same time.  Now before everyone attacks me..this is the real reason why I want to do this, I dont see the point of him having to have his own subscription in the meantime; especially if we're only going to be parted for just a year before we move back in together.  Does DISH allow this? Even if they don't, is this physically possible?

I know that when I move, I have to notify them and they'll change my locals over to Portland and I'm sure that he woudlnt be able to see my Portland locals (spot-beaming prevents this I assume)..any input would be appreciated

PS Sorry about the cross-post, but I could not find a way to DELETE my other post

yes this is possible, but it is not legal as it violates the Dish subscriber agreement.

The residential agreement states that all receivers have to hooked up to the same phone line at all times. So what you are discussing violates that---FWIW.

IF at least one location is not hooked up to a phone line you MIGHT be able to get away with it. Numerous people have discussed moving their receiver between two different addresses. Again it is prohibited in the agreement they signed but they were physically able to so it.

We are in a grey area. I guess what concerns me is that the line as to what is acceptable keeps moving. First it was just "moving" then it was a vacation home, now this. I guess in the end we all make our own decisions about what is appropriate.

I realize that they probably do this to prevent someone from setting up one account and then buying like 30 recievers and distributing them all to their family and freinds. I never hook these up to phone lines because it never seems to be convenient (phone jack never in living room).
Hrm..maybe we'll have to re-think this. The vacation home thing is a valid concern though....IMHO

IMHO, using two receivers at the same time in different locales is unethical. If it's a one-day or one-week scenario, it's a minor transgression, but you're talking about a whole year!

The right thing to do is to start two accounts. And it's the legal thing to do, too. But hey, it's your face and your mirror.

Well, I think once you hit, say, 20 receivers or so, E* would start to wonder if you really have that many TVs in your home. :)

Seriously though, I do wish E* would incorporate an ethernet port or something for those of us with broadband access.  I for one am trying to get *rid* of wireline phone service.

If you find that you are going to do it, don't hook up the phone line at the 'illegal' location..
Personally for only one year I don't think it's that bad, a matter of your level of eithics. It might be worth your while to start a new account. You can get a 508 or other PVR cheap as a new customer, committ to a year (often required under those internet sites that have these really good offers). Then bail after the year and you have a PVR when you move back together.

I have two receivers in the same house and both are hooked to different phone lines as I have two phone lines. Is that a problem? I kind of doubt it.

This is why only 6 receivers is allowed on an account then you have to pay for a new account again, because they figure if you can afford 6 receivers and 6 or so tv's along with the dishes/switches that are required, then you can afford another account.
