Purchase vs lease etc

Ok some really basic questions.

Can you Purchase hardware such as HD DVR's instead of leasing?

If you do lease it and it dies can you get it replaced? For how much?

You can buy (own) a HD DVR from DIRECTV for $499.

If you lease it and it dies you can get it replaced for free and no new contract if you have the protection plan.

If you don't have the protection plan you will be charged $20 for shipping and have to agree to a new 2 year contract.

More importantly, if you purchase it (for $499), and you DON'T have the protection plan, and it goes belly-up after 90 days - you have yourself one very expensive (and ineffective) boat anchor......

There is no difference in the month to month cost of using the receiver (leased versus owned). Same cost per receiver or DVR.
