NEW YORK - Stick a stake in it: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer (news - Y! TV)" is done.

After seven years, the series will be over at the end of this season, said its star, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

"'Buffy,' in this incarnation, is over," Gellar told Entertainment Weekly magazine for its March 7 issue, her eyes welling with tears.

The series will wrap up with a five-part story, which will include the return of Faith, the bad-girl slayer, and Buffy's first love, Angel.

"We're gearing up to tell a fabulous, huge, great arc," Gellar said. "It's going to be pretty spectacular."

The show has been on its lasts legs for the last 2 seasons. I bought the first 3 seasons on DVD and rewatching them has reminded me of how good the show used to be. The first few years were fun and light hearted. Vampires were slain with wit. The turned very dark and gloomy about the time Buffy dropped out of college. Last year's season dragged along in a very gloomy mood. This year at least they are trying to pick it up, but it is no where near as good as it was the first years.

Agreed that the first few years were the best, but I really liked the gloom of last year and how "a Zeppo" like Zander saves the day instead of Buffy. I may have a different perspective in that first I watched the 5 seasons back to back on FX and then jumped to season 6 First Run. But at least it is ending its run before it absolutley had to, and isn't beng stretched beyond its natural life (like friends)

I too have been watching it regularly, hoping that it could recapture some of its' glory days, but I've been disappointed with it ever since it went to UPN. The stories have been drearier except for minor flashes of brilliance (the episode where everyone goes loony for a bit (ie. Buffy takes a bazooka to take out the Principal and gets tackled in the background, Willow gets ready to cast a transgender spell on the male she is confusing attracted to, etc.).

Oh well, here's hoping Angel continues on to carry the torch, but even that show has been suffering a bit, although it still has those shocker episode endings that prove Joss Whedon can still surprise us when he wants to.

Now that Firefly is toast, this just leaves Angel to get my Joss Whedon fix. Here's hoping he doesn't stay away to long.
