View Full Version : IMPORTANT: Tonight's Hockey game WILL BE ON HD on 604

Though the feed on Versus / Golf is golf tonight, we have worked out a way to get an alternate feed tonight only for the Penguins - Flyers game in HD and it will be on channel 603.
The game will be in MPEG2 so some HD boxes you might need to channel up or down on 603 to see the HD signal, the MPEG4 boxes should auto tune to the correct feed.
Again, this is for tonight's Penguins - Flyers game one NHL playoff game
EDIT: CHANGE....now it's back on 604....Versus just changed their mind....they have just decided to put the NHL game on over the golf....this literally happened moments ago.
The GAME IS NOW ON 604, not 603!

Actually the guys and gals at the Broadcast Center rock....they made this happen with very little time to work with. So you can buy all those folks a beer....that might cost you a few pennies. :D

So, there are going to be two 603 channels? One HD and one SD? Wouldn't it just be easier to map it to Ch 94 or 95?

The thought was that if they went to 604, saw the golf, they're going to go to 603 to watch the SD version, but they'll be pleasantly surprised to find the HD version.
94 and 95 are not being used any more for these types of things so easier to put it in the same general area, especially for most customers who do not frequent message boards like this.

Thanks for pointing this out... now how to set this to record since the guide does not indicate this or hopefully I am missing something.
EDIT: Saw that it is now on 604. Since the guide data is wrong on my HR20, just setup a manual recording.

HD will be on Versus 604 now.(See SatRacers edit on post 1)
I suspect all this jostling got Versus to reconsider their position.

VS and Golf Channel have come to a last minute decision to keep it now on 604 now...literally minutes ago.
So 603 is out, it's now back on 604. VS has confirmed that all remaining games will be on in HD on 604.
MPEG 4, channel 604 on VS / Golf Channel.

It would have been interesting to see how that was going to work out with MPEG2 equipment (HR10-250) since I've never seen two different channels with the same number on those units. I seriously doubt if they would have been able to show MPEG2 HD on channel 603 on the HR10-250.

Nice job guys. All I know is that Versus/Golf really need to get their act together on their shared HD channel. Perhaps they should make a 604-1 HD part time channel available to show the hockey games on when Golf would normally be shown.

Go to http://m.directv.com and setup a manual recording on that channel. I just set one up for 5 hours!!!

Ok, scratch that - I guess there is only one 604 and it's HD. But what if there were 2, like TNT, etc?

Good questions. I assume that since my DVR is setup to "ignore" the SD channel that it will default to the HD channel. I'll have to try one to confirm. As far as time zone, use your current time zone - it will start it based on the clock on your DVR. So for me in CA, recording starts at 4:30 PM.

I just took a quick look at the guide and channel 603 appears to be showing the Flyers vs. Penguins at 7:30PM EDT.Channel 604 info displays "Live From the Players Championship".Is anyone else seeing this in their guide currently?

After sending my previous reply,I checked the channels out physically.
603 is currently live with "Sidney Crosby Revealed".
604 is live with "Live From the Players Championship" programming.

Gotta give some credit to Dish as well...the guide just got updated a few mins ago and the game is on 9468(for all u dish people), which is VS/GOLF HD. Glad everyone can watch this exciting game in HD....later.

The guide data comes from Tribune Media so that's why you see what you see in the guide.

It was supposed to be in HD. The issue is that Comcast (who owns both Versus and the Golf channel) doesn't have separate HD channels for both, it's a shared channel called VS/Golf HD and DirecTV carries it on 604. The VS/Golf HD channel always shows Golf on Thursday and Friday nights, period. Last year no NHL on those nights, just Golf...in SD no less. But so far this NHL playoff season DirecTV has been able to get the HD feed of the hockey games and override the Golf.

Welcome to the NHL in the USA! It has been an issue my whole life. When I was a kid the local CBS station (CBS had the NHL then) switched away from the famous Bobby Orr "flying" Cup clinching post-game to put on a rerun of "Wagon Train." Same stuff, different decade.

Okay, next time VS has this problem updating the guide with game info I'm definitely going to set up a manual record. This time I initially just set up to record the two golfing shows that would go to 11, thinking that was plenty of time for the game. We started watching about an hour after it started and noticed that the "Golf show" stopped recording near the end of the first period. Checked the guide and saw that the program was now called "title not available" or something like that. Fortunately since we were tuned to that station, we didn't lose anything but without thinking I just clicked record on this new program on the guide which, of course, stopped recording after a while when the guide was updated with the actual game info, "Penguins-Flyers." I guess I should have known better but I've never seen the guide this schizie before, changing programming titles three times within the space of an hour and a half.

I really appreciate that Versus made this decision.
But it is a bit annoying that the guide data isn't settled to the last minute. Thursday's Wings game didn't show up on 604 until Wednesday.
I also find it annoying that NBC isn't picking up a the Wings game today. They showed a semis game but not a conference final? It baffles me that hockey can't do a little better in this country.

Versus didn't make the decision. DirecTV decided to get the hockey game feed and show it instead of Golf. ;)

Yes, I can operate a program guide too. I'm also familiar with the Players Championship.
Like I said in my last post, I can't understand why hockey isn't more popular in this country. If it were at all popular, a conference final playoff game would be airing preferentially to a golf tournament that isn't even a major.

Whoever it was, glad to see it was worked out. These "wins" for the viewer need to be remembered since the "loses" are usually what get pointed out.
Too bad I wasn't able to watch any of the feeds since I was out of town.
