View Full Version : am21 connections
The usb reciever link/connector on the back of the am21 does not look like a
normal usb link/connector. Is this a D* connector made for them.
I searched dbstalk and could not find a am21 to hr21dvr wiring diagram. Does
anyone know of one.

The connection that is used for the AM21 is the same connection used for printers.
Did you get an AM21? If so it should have all the cables you need.
As for setting it up. You disconnect the power cord from the HR21. You connect the USB cable to the AM21 and the HR21. Then connect the power cord that comes with the AM21 to the AM21 and the HR21. Then connect the power cord that was connected to the HR21 to the AM21 and it will start up and take you right to the setup screen.

The little instruction paper with the AM21 is pretty good and easy to follow. Just as the former BMoreRavens said....

The power cord is not attached. Like I said in my other post you take the power cord that is connected to the HR21 and connect it to the AM21. Then you connect the power cord that comes with the AM21 to the AM21 and HR21.
Also I think the HDMI cable is a typo. I don't think it comes with one.

The power cable provides some of the power for the OTA receivers in the AM21. It also allows cascading of power to the HR21 when hooked up as the instructions show. The power cord attached to the AM21 is to be plugged into the HR21, providing it with power. There were no HDMI cables sent with my AM21's.

I don't know if we have a wiring diagram any where but here is our first look of the AM21. It will probably be able to help you.

You're probably familiar with the USB A-A type cables or A-mini A type (cell phones). The A-B cables are typically used for printers, as Mike noted above.

I'm use to the flash drive USB connector which I think is the mini B

I just received mine on Monday and the power cord from the AM21 to HR21 IS permanently attached to the AM21.
Is there any speed difference between the USB connectorsNo speed difference. Originally, USB didn't support peer-to-peer operation which meant that the topology had to have a single controller and either a direct connection to one peripheral, or connections to multiple peripherals through hubs, but without any loops. To enforce this 'A' connectors were used at the controller end and 'B' connectors on the peripheral. By making only A->B cables available as standard it became impossible to mis-connect things.
The mini connectors were introduced for use on smaller devices, particularly phones, cameras and MP3 players.
The next generation of USB has different, but mechanically similar, connectors that include new contacts for the new format and the current contact style for backwards compatibility.

I have attached a PDF of the wiring diargam in the booklet that came with my AM21's. The 1 meter power cable refered to is permanently attached to the AM21 with a connector on the other end for insertion to the HR21 receiver. Use the old HR21 power cord to connect power to the AM21. Hope this helps.

Flash drives actually use type A connectors. The connector doesn't matter for speed, what matters is the version, i.e., USB 1.0 or 2.0 (and soon 3.0). Most new products in the past few years have adopted USB 2.0.
And don't forget to hook up your OTA feed to the AM21. It went a long way to correcting the initial '771' issues I had with all my OTA channels in the guide.

USB A->B cable must be what is used to link the AM21 to HR21 DVR. With the
USB B type connector end inserted into the AM21 and the USB A type connector
end inserted into the HR21 DVR.

Is there two AC connectors on the back of the AM21.
Because the Pdf shows one, mite just be not that detailed of a drawing or
the person who drew it up never seen the equipment.
You said your AM21 came with a 1 meter power cable permanently attached to the AM21. The >am21[2].pdf< that I attached earlier in this thread shows
two AC connectors, maybe there are 2 or more AM21 versions.

Just to see if I would get a hit on yahoo for a AM21 User’s Guide
searched under AM21 manual
Here is what looks like a full AM21 OFF AIR TUNER User’s Guide Pdf
The pdf attachment was to large so I compressed it:
>AM21_ManualPreReleaseMan.zip.<
So what your saying is:
The higher version the faster the speed.Yes - USB 1.1 only supports Full-speed mode which operates at 12Mbps. USB 2.0 supports Full-speed mode and Hi-speed mode, which operates at 480Mbps (forty times faster). USB 3.0 will support a 4.8Gbps mode (another ten fold increase).

Exactly. More information for those interested in release dates and other information about the technology can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb).

Both my AM21's came with a power cord, approx 1 meter long, coming out of the AM21 with a connector on the end that inserts into the power connection opening on the HR21. The AM21's came with a power connection opening that accepts the same power cord end connector that the HR21 accepts. In other words, the 1 meter cord coming out of the AM21 looks like any other permanently attached power cord coming out of any appliance except that the plug on the end is not a normal wall socket type power plug, but has a plug that fits into the power plug-in of the HR21. The diagram would be more correct if it showed the one meter cord as coming out of the AM21 separately a couple inches from the main power plug in port location.
