Newbe here. I have read through any number of post on phone jacks and I still don't have a clear picture of what I need.

I'm having a 4 room SD installation in a few weeks in a newly purchased, 5yr old home. One of the rooms does not have a phone jack in it. But an even bigger problem is that we have decided that we want to be landline free. We both have cellphones that will hookup via bluetooth to a 9 unit cordless phone system. I really don't want PPV, never used it with cable, and if I understand it correctly the ID some post talk about is phone caller ID. Well, if we only use cellphones why would we even need that?

So, to have Direct TV I'm going to have to get a landline??? If so, it is not worth it to me. BTW internet will be DSL without landline service.

Thanks for any input.

No, you're good, no phone line required.

Welcome to DBSTalk

You do not need a phone line. You will only need it to order PPV from the remote. But you can call DIRECTV or order online still.

Just an FYI though, if you do ever get the urge to upgrade to HD, the HD DVRs have "dial home" via IP if you put them on your network (In case you do decide to get a PPV down the road and don't feel like getting online to order it).

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about D* Taking The phone line out of the directv software if you are networked? I see it is still there when you do system test. Of course mine says failed because i do not have it hooked up. But i would like to use it for caller id on tv, but i can't because every time i hook it up, a little while later it screws up my vonage router and i have to reset it without the phone line hooked up.

I doubt it will ever be removed because there are still optional functions for it.

What problems does it cause your Vonage router? I have Vonage but just the phone adapter and I am using a Linksys WRT54G wireless router without any problems. I do have a phone line connected to a few of my HD DVR's for CID.

I have the Vonage V-portal but evertime it is hooked up it does something to the router and my phone does'nt work so i have to reset it. I run 1 phone line out to a splitter and then one line to the hr20-700 and the other to the phones. I have talked to vonage about it and they say that having the box connected to it does do something to it. But i'm thinking there has got to be a way though.

So are you using another router too?

Is your HR20 networked?

I am trying to think what problem could be caused by connecting the phone to your HR20.

Yes it is networked, But i think the problem is, is that it still tries to phone home and when that happens is when it screws up the router because when i go to my vonage account it shows you the numbers that call out and and when i call that number it sounds like a fax machine. i can use dod and mediashare no problems.

Hopefully someone will have a fix for you. I am not really sure but I will keep thinking and I will send you a PM if I come up with something.

Thanks. Right now I'm running Ethernet over power wire for my home network. So I assume that the tuner-DVR has an Ethernet port?
