View Full Version : Adding Digital Output to DishPro DP-301?

I popped the top cover off my Dishnetwork DP-301 receiver and noticed it has the solder pads for a TOSLINK fiber optic module.
The solder pads are getting power, +5V.
The pinouts match the Sharp GP1F32T TOSLINK fiber optic transmitter. It looks like IF the digital output of the main processor is enabled, I should be able to just add the TOSLINK transmitter and a resistor (or even just jumper across the resistor pads) and get a digital audio output that I can connect directly to my digital preamp.
Will this work? Has anyone done it?
Ive seen pictures of it done before, it works, but only outputs PCM. No 5.1

Did you happen to bookmark the site with the pictures?
I've done a google search and come up with nothing.

Nope, the reply above is all I have.
I might have to pull out the old oscilloscope and see if there's any data on the digital output from the DSP chip.

I'm interest too
Ill see what I can dig up...it wasnt on the sites that pratice the friendliest aspects of satelite service, however..
**edit***
I found the info, but its on a site that also discusses hacking...
so Ill post the info here directly.
from the readme file:
100.010/301.010
First get these parts
you can get the parts here
www.digikey.com
425-1100-5-ND X 1
311-100ACT-ND X 1
311-1141-1-ND X 2
Next mark the case where you are going to drill a hole.
remove PCB
drill hole
remove solder from 3 spots shown
sold on three smaller components 2 capacitors and one resistor
next solder in Toslink transmitter
last drill hole and reassemble
How can I attach an Image?

Thanks! The important thing is, the digital output is "active". Not AC-3, but PCM is better than analog.
I used to have a good, inexpensive source for TOSLINK modules in my MiniDisc days ($10 shipped each).
I'll have to see if he still sells them.
The resistors and capacitors I bet I can pull off scrap circuit boards.

lets see if the .txt exploit still works on angelfire

wait a minute, so this will only be PCM? hrm...so how do you make it 5.1?
<wonders if, when a 5.1 program is playing, the output would be 5.1>
I'm sure it's only PCM, because even in the 4900 and 721 receivers the software default is PCM, you must select PCM/DD in a menu, and since the 301 doesn't have a menu for that since it has no digital out, I can't imagine you can change it. Maybe Dish would be nice enough to write some software to do so, although I'm guessing when you tell them what your doing they will have a heartattack
