I wanted to connect an external drive to my HR20-700 DVR and bought the following:

1. Western Digital 1TB My Book Home Edition External Hard Drive
2. Siig eSATA to eSATA (SATA II) Cable - 3.28ft

I connected the cable to the SATA connector on the back of the DVR and powered on the hard drive. I then reset the DVR. I got the message "Hello, your direct TV receiver is starting up" and then in a minute, it reboots again and I get the same message and it keeps rebooting again and again. It didn't seem to recognize the drive. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on ?

Thanks !

Welcome to DBSTalk

I believe the 1TB My Book's do not work with the HR20/21's. Hopefully someone will be able to confirm this.

If you do a search for 1TB My Book you should see some discussion about it.

EDIT: I just did a search and was reading some posts and the My Book's do not work with the HR20/21.

What about the 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Pro?

That I don't know. I know the Seagate FAP 750GB does work so I think it will.

I believe I seen some discussion a while ago that WD did something to the My Book's so that don't work with any DVR's.

The best advice you will find...repeated over and over on this site...is to buy the SATA HDD, of the internal variety, of your choice and put it in an ANTEC MX-1 enclosure.

i have a couple 500 gb drives i am going to do that with. but kinda off topic, if you pug in an external hard drive will you lose everything from your internal drive..... or will it be there when you unplug the external?

Is there a list yet of which drives work and don't work with the HR's?

Thanks

Has the feature been activated yet to allow use of the external hard drive concurrent with the built-in drive?

No and as far as I know I don't believe it was ever said it would be.

I dont believe anyone in their right mind wants to try to tackle the code to possibly make that work.....

SO the drives are set to work as one larger space, your eSATA gets disconnected in the middle of a recording, you would lose all recordings on the array...

I much prefer it this way....and if most people really try to understand all the complications that could occur by trying to make this happen, I think they would quit asking for it...large drives are dirt cheap..
