I am sorry for asking what much be a very dumb question but
I am a little confused.

I am about to switch from E* to D* and what I wanted to do was to get 2 receivers, one HDVR2 and one regular run of the mill jobbie. What hardware do I need to support this configuration?

Direct is going to give me (for free) a dual LNB dish and 2 receivers.

Can this dish support a PVR and another receiver, or do I need other hardware. Is that hardware expensive?

Direct tells me that they will not give me any credit towards the purchase of a PVR if I get only one receiver instead of 2. I need to ask, is that accurate?

Thanks,

-J

You are going to need a multi-switch in order to get more then 2 recievers working. If you are getting the PVR with the dual channel capability then that unit alone will need two lines... Let me know if you need more spefic info then that...

The multi-switch can range from as little as $15 on Ebay to as much as a few hundred dollars. You can get one from Radio shack for $75ish that will support 4 outputs. (4 outputs equals 4 receivers). If the line runs will be more then 100 feet then you should go for a powered multi-switch. Any installer should be able to do this for you as well

Good luck.

That dish can very well support a PVR and another reciever. I have two PVR's and two standard recievers hooked up to that exact same type of dish.

What you need is a multi-switch. A multi-switch is like a high-tech splitter. It takes your two inputs from the dish and allows for more outputs to the recievers themselves. They come in configurations like 2X4, 2X6, 2X8, and I've even seen 2X12.

I have a 2X6 multi-switch that is mounted in my laundry room where the two inputs from the dish come in and the six outputs go to the various rooms of the house.

You can find multi-switches at any number of online vendors, or at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I bought my Spaun 2X6 for $47 a while ago. www.mini-dishes.com also advertises a waterproof switch if you need to mount it outside.

You might also want to check with your installer. Many will either sell or give you one with your installation.

For your setup, this is the style of multi-switch you need:
