View Full Version : Can I Do This With The AM21?

I have 2 HR21s for 2 panel TVs in separate rooms. I just added an AM21 to one setup. The AM21 tuner seems to be much better than the OTA tuner on my old 10-250, and I'd like to have separate OTA HD on both TVs without buying another AM21.
The connection between the HR21 and the AM21 is a USB cable. I'd like to run the USB cable out from the AM21 to a USB 2.0 hub and then run separate USB cables from the hub to each of the HR21s. From what I understand of USB, it would seem that a hub setup should work, but I'm no techie. Has anyone done this or know if it can be done?:nono2:

I was wondering the same thing. In theory I would think it would work, as the AM21 is just for signal and feeding the DVR that signal correct?

I don't know and this is complete speculation but if the AM21 is truly a dual tuner unit (which I thought it was supposed to be) and interfaces through a single USB cable, then my concern would be that both HR21's being on and trying to access OTA could conflict and try to use the same tuner. This might get you into trouble. Of course if you only use one TV at a time, then it seems reasonable that this might work although someone would have to try it. I think it will depend upon whether the tuner control is in the AM21 or is commanded by the Hr21.

you could use a hub for one but because they dont make a cable with the same usb conections on both ends unless it is a data link cable you could not connect the 2 hr21 to the hub. and no the data link cable wont work

Hubs don't work that way. A hub is designed to give access to multiple USB devices, not allow multiple computers to access one USB device. The only way to do that is to use a USB switch, but you would still only be able to access the USB device by one computer at a time. In your situation you would only be able to access the AM21 on one HR21 at a time. There is no way to use it with 2 DVRs at the same time.

Further, unless you re-configured the DVR that was not connected to the AM21 (remove OTA option and do a reset probably), it will give you an error message. You also need to set up the DVR that is connected. Basically you would have to reconfigure and reset both DVRs each time you switched the AM21 between them.

No possibly way to do this. USB is a bus that supports hubs but it is also a host/client model and you can't have 2 hosts. Both STBs will be trying to act as hosts and that won't work.
