View Full Version : DirecTV Service Plan?
Unbeknownst to me, when I ordered HD service from DirecTV, I was signed up for their "Service Plan" for an additional $5.99 a month.
Is this really worth the expense? I'm considering removing it from my account.

This is asked all the time. It is a personal preference. I have it I like it. There are benefits, my son bumped the pole my main dish was mounted on and cut the wires to boot. It got all fixed for nothing but would have been like $75.00. If your receiver croaks it saves you $20.00 on shipping.

It is really up to you. Some don't think it is worth it and some like myself do think it is worth it.
I have needed to dish realignments and it has saved my two $80 service calls. Plus it covers all equipment (receiver's, cables, multi-switch, and dish).
If you would need an advanced or non advanced receiver replaced and you have the protection plan there is no charge and no new contract.
If you don't have the protection plan it would be a $20 shipping charge and a new 2 year contract for advanced equipment and 18 months for non advanced equipment if you have less than that amount of time on your current contract.
Everything is covered for the 90 days without the protection plan.
BTW if you do want to cancel the protection plan you may have to call DIRECTV and get that taken care of because once it is added to your account you have to keep it for 12 months so it may not let you remove it online.
I have the H20-100 for HD...if i decide to upgrade my receiver at some point, does the service plan buy me anything?

no
Just thought of something else...I got my HD installed on 4/8...that would cover me until 7/8. It doesn't make much sense to have the plan activated until after 7/8. Can you get it "removed" and have it reinstituted at a later time?

As long as you can get it removed without a problem you can add it any time you want but it takes 30 days for you to be fully covered. If something happened you could add it any time but you would have to pay a smaller amount of the actual cost within the first 30 days and than keep the protection plan at least 12 months.

It is worth it to me I had a LOS issue recently and a tech came out, told me what trees were the issue. The one visit is worth the yearly investment.

When I upgraded from HR250 to new receiver/recorder and new dish I got the $19.95 shipping waived because I had Service Plan or so I was told that is why it was waived.

The service plan does cover the 19.95 shipping and handling, it also prevents the contract extension when they replace a recieve outside of the first 90 days. without the plan you have a contract extension. This has been pointed out before in the other threads.
Add to the fact it also covers and 79.00+ truck roll service call for dish alignment, cables being eatne by local wild life (squirrels, teenagers, etc), lighting strikes, etc
