View Full Version : Weird dish from ebay

I bought a DirecTV dish from ebay. Just the old single lnb dish. The dish looks sideways. It is taller than it is wide. The picture in the ebay auction was a standard round dish. This one looks like the regular oval dishes, except sideways.

Will it work? Or should I drill new holes and turn the dish sideways, so it looks like a normal dish?

Thanks.

edit:
Is there somewhere in the world where they use dishes that are taller than they are wide? Or did someone screw up when they drilled the holes?

Does it look like any on this page-

http://www.solidsignal.com/cat_display.asp?main_cat=02&cat=DIRECTV%20Dishes

and does it have the Directv logo?

No it doesn't look like those dishes. It is 21 inches tall and 18.5 inches wide.

It has a DirecTV logo but it looks smudged, like someone painted it on with a stencil, probably not an official DirecTV dish.

Everything in the box looks brand new. The dish, lnb, mounting brackets, bolts.

Does the LNB have any numbers on it?

I think I used to have one of those. I wouldn't worry about it. There were quite a few different manufacturers - Terk, RCA, etc.

The LNB looks normal. The model number is SF2-D3.

Thanks. Someone probably repainted an old dish to make it look like a new DirecTV dish.

All "round" dishes are actually ovals that are taller than they are wide. This is a function of the fact that DBS dishes are "offset" dishes. Notice that the LNB isn't centered, but 22.5% below the dish's center? And the signals come in 22.5% above the dish.

Again, there have been at least 6 manufacturers of "round" dishes over the years, and the designs have varied slightly, but all work just fine.

Some of the paint jobs are pretty bad. Considering its made in China probably by 7 year olds, what do you expect? :(

I threw a bunch of 18" dishes in the scrap metal recycling container not long back, retaining the best one of the bunch and all the LNB's. One of the ones I tossed was definitely as you describe, in that it was noticeably more vertically elongated than the rest. Go ahead and install it; it'll be fine. :)

Dishes are generally power-coated (a bake-on plastic coating), not painted.

Spelling fix (I am sure you just skipped a letter, it happens) - "Powder Coated"

I frankly wish the logo was not there at all but what do ya do :p

(My old sony dish was whiter with no logo, which was nice)

Hey you'll probably get a better signal with its somewhat-oversized-ness!
