I saw this at BB the other day. Would this be supported on a 622? There are 2 versions: USB 2.0 and USB 2.0 + SATA, the first one being less expensive. Which one would I need? Does it make a difference?

Unless there's been a recent change that I'm not aware of, the ViP-622 cannot support a 1TB drive. Last I heard they were limited to 750GB. I have a Seagate 750GB (USB 2.0) that I operate out of the 622's USB port.

As far as I can tell, the 750GB is the largest the 622/722 line will support. Of course, now we have the "nifty" WD 500GB My DVR Expander certified by WD for use on Dish equipment....
(See this thread (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=1603404#post1603404). And my "nifty" was intended to be sarcastic.)

The latest official word is twofold...
Dish does not support external hard drives greater than 750GB. Dish also does not support ANY drive that is comprised of dual-drive components (ex. some 500GB and 1TB drives are actually comprised of 2 smaller drives connected in such a way that the computer sees them as a single larger drive).
That said... some folks have used 1TB drives without problem. It's just that Dish does not currently support it, and if you have any problems you will be out of luck.
THAT said... some folks with 500GB drives have recently had problems and even lost recordings... and Dish appears to not really be all that helpful in terms of diagnosing what the problem is.
So a big "your mileage may vary" seems to be at work here.
Sadly, HDMe is right. They don't even support the ones they say they support. Ask them for help and you'll either get a generic "we're working on it" or "please consult with the manufacturer". The fact that you're stuck with a $40 uselessly-activated USB port or a part-time archiving device notwhistanding.

So far I haven't lost a byte of data, but I have a 722 and it probably hasn't had time to go bad. Right now I'd lose 90 movies. What? A pessimist?:eek2:

I lost an entire WD 320g drive full of programming with my 622. Upgraded to a 722 and haven't had a problem.
Hopefully, you'll be OK as well.

I just started watching the first of probably 40 hours of recordings on my Western Digital 750 gig Essentials drive, and at first, the first two recordings stopped after 20 minutes +/- and said "Done", and when I tried to restart, they were gone. I had at least 20 movies recorded. I then switched over to my 622 and watched a movie, came back to the EHD, and there were only 5 recordings there! When I tried to watch them, all five wouldn't start, they went immediately to "Done", so they're all gone. I had initially watched a couple of movies when I was all excited earlier this year and started dumping movies over there, and they were fine; now they're all gone. My Dish experience just keeps getting worse and worse.

Well, guess what? While talking with the Dish Technical Services rep, she was taking all the notes to make a report, and I had unplugged my WD 750 gig Essentials to verify the S/N, and then brought it back to the media center, plugged it in again, and all 25 recordings not only were there, but the movie I'd been dumped out of earlier this evening even had a "Resume" prompt, I hit it, and the movie started where it had dumped me out! I then went to a 2-1/2 hour movie and fast forwarded through the whole thing, and it was all there. So, if you folks are having problems with dumped recordings, unplug the power, just like you would on a 622/722 for at least 10 seconds (my WD EHS was unplugged for about 20 minutes), and it will reset itself. Your recordings will all be there, and they will work. I'm very happy! Now if only the VOOM channels would come back, but that's another thread.......

I'm glad that worked for you. I wouldn't get too complacent. Lots of folks tried that and it didn't work. Let us know if it continues to operate satisfactorily.

It did not work satisfactorily. Started watching other events last weekend...after the L510 download...and it still does the same thing. Unplug the EHD for 30 seconds, and the ability to "Resume" appears, and it's fine for another 10 minutes, then does it again. So now I start the Tech Chat online yesterday morning and get the "I've never heard of this; we'll make a note and file a tech report...there's nothing we can do". When I talk about the forums and the feeling that it's a L449 issue, and that replacement 622's don't seem to work, but 722's do work fine, I ask, as a 10+ year subscriber at the highest level the whole time, can I get upgraded to a 722. He says yes...for $125. I told him that will never happen, I've already invested the fee for the ability to lease the 622, plus the $40 EHD fee, plus the cost of the EHD and all I want is functionality. He said sorry, all he can do, yada-yada. I asked him for the email address to the CEO's office, and he said there isn't one! He gave me some tech support Dish email, which I sent the transcript to along with another explanation. Today I get the canned response that it is being forwarded to the tech department. Why can't they just say that they're either trying to or not trying to fix it. Now I'm going to call again, and forget the "chatroom" venue. What a joke.
