Very true that you can't blame MS for this one, but how many 15 year old MS programs are widely used today? ;)

I'm still using Microsoft's mouse.com for my DOS Emulator to Play Steel Panthers under 2000/XP. ;)

Alot of old code was reused in earlier versions of Windows. Our current generation (2000, XP) was a result of MS redesigning the OS from scratch and creating Windows NT. I'm also pretty sure that some of the old DOS code was left in even the current Windows versions for compatibility reasons.

Actually W2K and XP have very little, if none, old DOS code as they wanted to get rid of the compatibility to make a more stable environment. WinME was the last OS to have enough DOS code in it to be considered backward compatible with DOS. One of the reasons I have to install a DOS emulator program under XP to get my DOS games to work (and they barely do) I've taken to making a small partition of FAT32 and boot from a custom floppy WIN98 disk to play these games.
