I have gone back and forth with DirecTV over my locals here in Waco, Tx. We have NBC and CBS in HD here. Fox and ABC broadcast in HD, but not over Direct. I have been back and forth with both Direct and the two locals that I don't receive. According to Direct, the locals need to update their equipment to send the signal in HD. According to the locals, they OFFERED their programming to Direct and Direct didn't want it (this came from the station manager of our ABC station here).
Who do I believe? Does ComCorp of Texas have a thing against Satellite providers? I noticed that the situation with a ComCorp station in the Tyler area is in same situation.
My email from the local station was rather snippy....told me to buy an over the air antenna (which would not work on my older TV anyway).
Who should I believe?

Sounds like any of the following could be the case...
1. They are both right. They may have offered to give the signal to Directv, but when Directv said you need to help out in supplying the feed to us they may have balked...
2. Do you know who owns those stations? If its LIN... then thats the problem...
3. one or both are just lying...
4. When the station offered the programing, they probably asked for a ridiculos fee and Directv said that when they come down to earth and ask the same as every other station in the area, they will agree to it...
You could use an OTA antenna and hook it up to your HD box, and all would be through the guide on your sat box.

I don't believe our locals' public rationales - ever! The only exception has been the backdoor explanations a few rec'd about local PBS dumbing down their bandwidth to add a few more truly irrelevant subchannels.
Even there, public explanations are more diplomatic than "the idiots on the Board of Directors are afraid of such-and-such a community org".
The only serious local not accounted for is owned by Lin - and they automagically suck, too.

FWIW, all the stations owned by LIN fall into category 4. So, #2 is a subset of #4. (On a nation-wide basis, #2 represents the vast majority of cases like #4).

Will my HR 21 do that? My TV is older and does not have the built in converter.

Welcome to DBSTalk
Your HR21 does not have built in OTA tuners. You would need to buy the add on unit AM21 to add OTA tuners to it.

You will have to get an AM 21 then you can use an OTA.
The AM21 is available on the DirecTV web site for $50 and it includes shipping. Connecting it to a HR21 makes it act just like a HR20 for OTA ATSC channels.

Awesome...AM 21 is on the way. Can I use the standard HD ready indoor attenna? I would post the link, but I haven't had 5 posts yet, so I am not allowed.

It depends. I am using one but I am not too far from the towers here in Baltimore. You will have to test it and see what happens.

If you have decent line-of-sight, you can get away with a Zenith Silver Sensor. Not one of the imitations
I'm 47 miles from antenna farm down Abq way on Sandia Crest; but, I can see the critters with a decent pair of binoculars.
Got my Silver Sensor on sale for $25 and it works just fine.

You got that right. Our local NBC is owned by LIN and of course if you contact them about why they aren't on DirecTV they will give you the same line that "we have offered our signal to DirecTV but have not come to an agreement", "ball is in their court" and so forth. Of course we all know the real reason. :)
