View Full Version : HD Upgrade Dilemma – I've "Moved"

I live 100 miles south of San Francisco. Several years ago I "moved" so I could get the Bay Area locals via DIRECTV (my locals weren't available at the time). I'm now ready to upgrade to HD, but I don't want to give up the Bay Area locals because they are HD while my locals (which are now available on DIRECTV) are not. I'm guessing if I call DIRECTV to set me up with new equipment and an install they will realize my real geographic location and switch me to my true locals. So...either I need to do the install myself or find someone who will do it under the table. From what I've read, pointing the 5LNB dish is more complicated that the single LNB I currently have, but not impossible. Should I try it myself or find someone to do it for me? If I should find someone, how do I find them without calling DIRECTV? Thanks for any feedback.

A local custom home theater installation company should be able to handle your dish installation. It won't be free, of course.

You sound like you may have previously installed your own dish. While the alignment for the Ka/Ku 5 LNB dish is more precise, the construction of the mount is designed to make that precision much easier to achieve than the older mounts. The main issue is that the dish is much larger and heavier, and the mounting plate must be very securely attached. It's also very important that the mast be perfectly plumb. With those considerations you can easily purchase your own dish online (http://www.summitsource.com/directv-au9s-slimline-ka-ku-5-lnb-hdtv-satellite-dish-antenna-integrated-mpeg4-multisat-receivers-for-local-programming-with-builtin-multiswitch-feed-arm-mounting-assembly-at9-replacement-dish-part-au9s-p-6336.html) for about $100 (incl. shpg.) and align your dish using the receiver's Signal Meters selection under View Signal Strength.

I understand that this isn't really a discussion about "moving" but as the original poster is trying to sustain that activity and is looking for our advice on how to do it...

I must close this thread. Any discussions of "moving" or deceptive practices designed to avoid the rules in your customer agreement are not allowed.
