TiVo, the personal video recorder (PVR) company, reported Thursday strong subscriber uptake for its product during the past year. Also, one of its partners revealed how the PVR technology is attracting viewers for new satellite subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services.
TiVo added 115,000 new subscribers during its fourth quarter, bringing the total subscriber base to approximately 624,000 as of Jan. 31. The company said its subscriber base grew 64 percent during the fiscal year that ended Jan. 31.
TiVo said it expects to add between 450,000 and 600,000 subscribers during its current fiscal year, more than double the number it added in the previous 12-month period. The projected additions would result in an installed base of more than 1 million subscribers by Jan. 31, 2004, the end of TiVo's current fiscal year.
The company may get support from satellite TV in its goal to reach 1 million users. Samsung and Philips have announced they will offer DirecTV receivers with TiVo later this year. And existing partner Hughes Network Systems announced in January that it will offer an HDTV receiver built on a new TiVo technology platform.
Meanwhile, Greg DePrez, vice president of SVOD for Starz Encore Group and a speaker at Kagan's VOD Summit panel in New York City, shared results during his session Thursday concerning a trial of Starz On Demand on DirecTV's PVR/TiVo service (known as SOD on DirecTV).
He said that as of December 2002, SOD on DirecTV users were watching 3.9 Starz On Demand movies per month, compared to 2.6 reported in October, an approximately 50 percent increase. DePrez said 75 percent of those using the system attributed increased satisfaction with DirecTV because of the service.
