When trying to change from IR to RF the remote is not working and the receiver is stuck in RF. Does it need working remote to go back to IR? How do I go back to IR from receiver's menu? How do I reset the remote to IR without reseting to factory settings?

When changing from IR to RF, there is a point at which the Remote will no longer work. You've changed the receiver to RF, but you haven't changed the remote to RF. Here are ALL of the steps...

On the DirecTV Receiver:

1. menu> settings> setup> remote> IR/RF>

2. you will see either IR or RF, tap whichever to reveal both

3. press RF

4. press DONE, the remote won't work any longer.

Now do the following on the remote(s):

a) Slide switch to DTV

b) press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks

c) enter 9 6 1

d) press CH UP

e) enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment

f) press SELECT

Thank you,
most probably the remote that came with it is not RF capable because I did both steps twice. I will get a RF remote asap but how can I undo RF in the receiver menu from the receiver front panel?
I think I can make the remote work in IR by 961 + CH Down and turn the RF off right?

If the remote is RF-capable there will be an FCC sticker on the back of it. If it's NOT RF-capable then you don't need to worry about taking it out of RF mode. :)

You can access all of the menus for SETUP from the front panel of your receiver using Menu, arrow-ring, and Select, to get the receiver out of RF mode.

BTW, what is the model number on your remote?

A non-RF remote will still accept the RF programming procedure, but only thing it does is turn off the IR in the directv device, for SAT commands. So they do have to worry about getting a non-RF remote out of Rf mode, There are two ways:

1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 6 1
4. press CH DOWN

Or simply program code 00001 to the directv device:

1. dtv
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 0 0 0 0 1

Edmund can quote the manual. Just in case you want to see what is in the manual at http://directv.com/manuals

ACTIVATING AND DEACTIVATING THE RF TRANSMITTER

Your DIRECTV Remote Control features RF (radio frequency) capability. When you activate the RF feature of your remote control, you can control your DIRECTV
Receiver from anywhere in your home. You do not need to be within the line of sight of your receiver to control it.
NOTE: Not all DIRECTV Receivers are RF-capable. Also, some RF-capable DIRECTV Receivers include integrated RF antennas and do not require an external antenna. If your receiver requires the external RF antenna, before
activating the RF transmitter, locate the RF antenna included with your remote control and insert it into the RF remote antenna coaxial connector on the back of your DIRECTV Receiver.

Activating the RF Transmitter
To activate the RF transmitter on your DIRECTV Remote Control, perform the following steps:
1. Locate the digit Receiver ID (RID) number of your DIRECTV Receiver. You can find the RID number on the back panel of your receiver, or inside the CAM access door next to the reset button.
2. Write down the last six digits of the RID number.
3. Slide the mode switch to DIRECTV, AV1, or AV2.
4. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until thegreen light under the selected switch flashes twice and release both keys.
5. Using the number keys, enter 9 6 1. (The green light flashes twice.)
6. Press and release CHAN UP. (The green light flashes twice.)
7. Using the NUMBER keys, enter the last six digits of the RID number. (See step 2 above.)
8. Press and release the SELECT key. (The green light flashes twice.)

Deactivating the RF Transmitter
To deactivate the RF transmitter on your DIRECTV Remote Control, perform the following steps:
1. Slide the mode switch to DIRECTV, AV1, or AV2.
2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys until the green light under the selected switch flashes twice and release both keys.
3. Using the number keys, enter 9 6 1. (The green light flashes twice.)
4. Press and release CHAN DOWN. (The green light flashes twice.)
The RF transmitter on your remote control is now deactivated. To reactivate the RF transmitter, See “Activating the RF Transmitter” above.

RESTORING FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS
To reset all the functions of the remote control to the factory defaults (the original, out-of-the-box settings), follow these steps:
1. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT keys at the same time until the green light flashes twice, then release both keys.
2. Using the number keys, enter 9-8-1. (The green light flashes 4 times.)

I stand corrected.

I know the HR20-700 and HR21-700 receivers have built in RF antennae. Is the procedure for activating the RF mode on the 700s the same as listed here on this thread? I don't remember the instructions shown in my manual having quite that many steps.
