I've just gotten DirecTV and have the HR21/AM21 and haven't played around with it too much, yet, so bear with me. :)
When you decide to record a program, do you do anything about switching to the other tuner, or does it just switch transparently when you change channels after starting the recording? Also, if you turn on the TV/Receiver while a programmed recording is in progress, I'm assuming that the inactive tuner will come up. Is that correct?

Yes. If you are recording only one thing the box will record the show in the background and when you turn on the tv it should come on to the last channel you were watching.

The HR21 will swap tuners in the background as needed based on what you're doing.
As for the inactive tuner comming up when you take the HR21 out of standby while it's recording - that depends on many things.
Generally, if the recording taking place while in standby is on a channel different than what you were watching when you put the HR21 in standby, you're going to bring it out of standby on the non-recording channel.
But, if while in standby you get 2 recordings going at the same time prior to this other recording, it's going to depend on what 2 channels recorded, so it's hard to say for certain that you'd come out of standby on the non-recording channel under these circumstances.
