View Full Version : Is anyone HAPPY with their 722?

I'm thinking of getting DISH HD, but it appears there are major, major issues with all of the DVRs - 612, 622 and 722.
I had thought the 722 seemed to be the most trouble-free, but it seems like none of them really can be counted on to work and not need daily resets. :(
Am I over-reacting?
I'm just hoping for something at least as reliable for DISH HD as my (gasp!) TiVo S3 currently is for OTA HD, as I rarely watch any programming "live" - it's all timeshifted to a later time and/or date.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

As a former SD Tivo owner, I love my 722. The DVR user interface is not quite as eloquent as the Tivo (IMHO) but it's damn close. In addition, you can record up to three HD events simultaneously while watching a fourth. If you're worried about the 722 because of what you're reading on this forum as of late, it's due to a software upgrade that was rolled out to a relatively small number of users. I'll bet it gets pulled back, fixed and quickly re-introduced.
Have no fear. It's a great DVR.
You may be overeacting a tad, k.
I'm a 622 user that finds the nightly updates both necessary and vital. For one thing, new software (glitches notwhithstanding) keeps making improvements on the functionality of the machine, and for another the electromic program guides have to be updated or you won't know what's coming.
I have a pretty solid machine that's more than reliable. If the 722's are even better (so I read on occassion), then you can be sure it's not a bad choice.

Been said a number of times here. The support forum is where people discuss issues so you are going to read a lot more my receiver sucks type posts. However, based on what I have read on numerous posts similar to yours is that there are a lot of very happy 722s users. I am one of them. Is it without its issues. Nope, but in my opinion it is a very functional unit. Besides the night reboot that it does, I personally have not rebooted my box in months and don't recall the last time my box rebooted on its own.
Ofcourse, everyone's experience will be different depending on how one uses the box, configuration, installation, etc so mileage will vary but my opinion is the 722 is a most excellent DVR.
Since this really is not a 722 support question and since we have a no bash rule in our support forums I am going to move this thread into our general area where people can talk more freely about their experiences.

My 622 has been in service since July of 06. It's the only one I've ever had. Except for the OTA problems caused by software release L4.46 it has been pretty solid. :)

I have 3 622's and no problems at all (knock on wood) with any of them. :)

I've had my 722 since March and it runs perfect. I can only remember 1 time it rebooted when I had 3 programs start recording at once while watching a recorded event. It locked up, rebooted, reloaded, and then started recording again on all 3 tuners only missing about 5 minutes.
I think it crashed because of a bad signal from the OTA tuner from my local FOX affiliate.
My parents have had a 622 for a year now, and it works perfectly as well.

Specifically, what problems are you addressing? All the ViP models reset daily after the update. It's automatic. As for the ViP722, how many problems have you seen reported for that model?

If you notice, the problems with L5.10 seem to be confined to the 622, not the 722. The 722 appears to be unaffected by L5.10.

My 622 is impervious to L5.10 ... I'm still running L4.49.

I've had a 622 for about 9 months. Love it. Haven't had a single problem. (It's still on 449, so I don't know about 510)
The 921 I've had for several years.....well, it has room for improvement

Yes. Had my 622 for 2 years and had no problems. Yes it has to reboot nightly for the update but if it didn't, your guide would never update.

Had a 622 with no problems. It was replaced with a 722 because I had a nice technician out to fix my dish. :) It rocks.
And I'll add to the other sentiments about overreacting. Wherever you go to see comments, especially on a support forum, a majority of comments are going to be bad. No one complains about technology that works. :)
I got my 722 in January, and I haven't had any issues with it at all. Any problems I've had have always been "operator error," and that is my fault for not giving my wife and our babysitter adequate training before allowing them to touch the remote. I personally love the 722, to me it is really easy to use, and it works everytime I turn it on. HD seems to black out when it's windy but that's a dish issue, not a receiver issue I would think.

I'm very happy with my 722; had it since last fall. No problems at all with the DVR. Had to call for a repoint of the dish a couple of weeks after initial installation, due to low signal strength, but that was minor.

You are over reacting. I've gone through more 622 receivers than I'd like to admit due to the rebooting issue (software related, I believe) but my current units are nearly flawless.

My 722 is great.
With that said, when I had my HD install in August the 722 provided had a problem. Dish replaced it quickly and I have had no problems since.
Well, not exactly no problems. It has rebooted twice because of something in the playback of a particular recording or how I was skipping commercials or whatever. Also, the local stations aren't real good about maintaining their HD feeds. Satellite 129 has its problems but is due to be replaced in 2009.. And when Dish downloaded the upgrade giving us identification codes for the EHD, one of those burped.
But these things involve fairly complex computer systems. And my 722 gives me far fewer problems then the computer I'm typing this on!
I went through 3 622s after the 4.49 update, but my 722 has been really solid so far. And as such its a really great DVR, better than any others out there from what I know first hand or from my conversations with people who have other boxes (tivo, cox etc..)

BTW, I really appreciate the responses here.
Following the issues over in the 622/722 threads makes it sound as if the best use for these DVRs is as a paper weight. :D

It is absolutely worth the time taken to read other people's experiences and weigh them appropriately... but do weigh them appropriately.
The example I always give when your question comes up is...
Go to a hospital emergency room and ask everyone there how they are doing. You should get a lot of "horrible" and "feels like I'm dying" answers... but you wouldn't go out into the world and assume everyone must be on their deathbed just based on your observations at the hospital.
Similarly, don't assume every Dish receiver must be a failure based upon the negative experiences read in a forum. Keep in mind that first we are very much a minority of Dish's 13+ million customers... and second that most of us do not start "I am so happy my receiver works perfectly" threads even when that is true much of the time.
The tendency in a forum like this is to discuss what is wrong rather than what is right... though sometimes the positiveness does creep in. :)
Love my 722 and have had no issues so far since it was installed 7 months ago. Recording 3 HD programs at once rocks!
I switched from Directv and 2 SD dual tuner Tivo dvrs when they wouldn't let me upgrade to a HD DVR without buying the stupid thing. :nono:
One thing I will mention is to make sure you keep the 722 cool. Mine rebooted itself twice in the first 3 days we had it while we were watching tv. Then I realized how hot it was getting in my enclosed entertainment center. Now I leave the sliding glass door open about an inch on that side and I haven't had any problems since.

Love my 622 and 722.
Absolutely the best DVR's I have ever used.
I upgraded to HD about 4 months ago and picked up 2 of the 722s. When I first installed them, they were in a closed cabinet and they would both reboot without warning sometimes. I moved them outside into the open room, and have had no problems since. They have operated flawlessly, and I am very pleased with the capability. I can record 6 HD programs at once!!! (4 satellite and 2 OTA).

My 722 has been in service for about 7 months and for the most part has been trouble free. There has been occasional quirkiness from time to time but nothing major. One time a program I recorded would not play back properly. I only saw that once. Something corrupt in the data stream may have played a part in that problem because other people reported the same problem with the same recorded program. HD playback is flawless. DVR functionality is pretty good.
I'm a former mythtv user and I really miss commercial skip and being able to copy the mpegs to my notebook or psp for a plane trip from time to time. Myth's recording scheduler is worlds better than anything else out there, but maybe in some ways is too complex for the average household. I wish there was at least something equivalent to the tivo desktop for the 722. I guess we won't see that from dish though. Maybe we'll see some sort of slingbox functionality in a future receiver. Who knows.
I'd love it if I could just point my web browser at my 722 to browse recorded programs and just download it or wget a few programs to go. Even if it was at a reduced resolution, that would be great.
By and large, the 722 seems to perform well enough as designed. It's quiet and pretty much just works. My 722 is well ventilated and sits on metro-style wire steel shelving. Nothing sits above or below it.

My 722 has been rock hard since installation (early Jan 2008). Now, I hope I don't get the L5.10 update, at least until it's fixed...
I've had 3 622's and the only problem I ever had with one of them was the HDMI went out. It was replaced by a 722 so now I have 2 622's and one 722. I am extremely happy with all three receivers.

As a former owner of cable companies MOXI and Motorola 3416/6416 DVRs, the VIP722 is superior. It is the main reason I switched from cable to Dish TV. I was really tired of the cable companies DVRs constantly breaking down or not operating properly. I read the reviews of the VIP622 and the single coax technology that Dish TV had and decided to give it a try. As a plus that I did not know about at the time was the way the VIP622/722s can record three channels at the same time with OTA antenna and how TV2 can be sent thru the home distribution system so the other TVs can watch different channels. I have had the VIP722s and a 625 DVR since September 07 and I am really pleased with them. The only major disappointment I have had with Dish TV is there is no switch available that can handle five or more satellites.
You allow your wife to touch the remote?
only when i'm not home though.:hurah:

It does run pretty hot I think, but, as precaution I hooked up and old computer fan and an old DC out transformer ( this is why I never trow out anything that still works ) and put it at a 45 degree angle to the vent slots to draw the hot air out and push it out of my cabinet. Works great
So far ours has worked great. Did have a couple of times when mom turned it on and we had no volume on both tv's. She waited till I got home from work. Didn't quite know what to do my self so I unplugged the power stripped and turned it back on then we had sound but other than that been purring like a kitten-working fine. Max.

I'm thinking of getting DISH HD [...]JM2CW... the 722 is a really good unit. It's very nice being able to record an OTA HD, and two Dish HD channels simultaneously. While all that's going on you could be watching HD programming that you've recorded. Video and audio quality is exceptional. I've yet to find a better image on copper, fiber, or dish.
As mentioned, many of the problems you've read about deal with the 622, and those problems are being solved with a new, fixed software update.
Go for it.
