View Full Version : Dish to Direct TV
I finally after years with Dish, changed to Direct TV. As of now, it was the right move. My programing was set up. I got all 4 movie channels for free for 3 months, Free HD and HD Extra for 3 months, $23.00 off a month for 12 months, and Showtime free for One Year. At the time I left Dish, I was paying 149.99 a month (Including taxes) for everything. The installer came on time and did a Perfect Job. He was a perfectionest. Eveything looks great. Wires look great. Love the SlimDish look. Love the HD DVR too. {HR21-100 Black} I always hear the VIP622/722 are the best, but so far I like Direct TV's better. (I had the 622). The picture quality is definitly better with Direct TV. Both HD and SD. The main reasons I left Dish were the loss of the Voom Channels, No Logo Channel (They say they are still in nagosiations. They have been saying that for years) and last I stopped getting my over the air channels except 6 of them and when I run the line directly into the TV, I receive all of them which tells me it must be the receiver. I also had problems losing recorded programs. Even after explaining the situation they would not send me a New 622. They said it was the antenna, though I explained the antenna was bringing in all the channels because I received them on 2 different TV's when connected. So for those reasons, plus the cost, I switched. After having the install, I called to cancel Dish. When I was asked why I was canceling the service and told her about the 622, now there was no problem, she would send one right out. I told her they should have done that to begin with. Now that I am changing, you want to send it out. I told her I already had the new install done so she could stop with all the offers to me so I would stay. If anyone has problems with there receivers and they won't send you a new one, just tell them you are canceling your service and you will get a new one in the mail the same day. So to all of you that can't make up there mind if they should change to Direct TV, Just do it. Hopefully it will turn out as great for you as it did me. M.A.N.

Direct TV blows Dish away on HD!!
They have been saying that for years) and last I stopped getting my over the air channels except 6 of them and when I run the line directly into the TV, I receive all of them which tells me it must be the receiver. The current DIRECTV HD receivers cannot receive OTA channels at all!
For me, being able to record the OTA programming is imperative.
As I recall, moving to DIRECTV trades one GLB channel for another.

I get my HD Locals on the channels they are suppose to be on with DirectTV. Channel 2,4 etc. With Dish Ch 2 was on 6104 etc. Now I don't even need my OTA Antenna. Cause the channels are where they are suppose to be and in HD and I can record them. No Problem....

In my market, DMA ranked #23, we don't get CBS HD or PBS digitals from DIRECTV.

I might get Directv HD again maybe, at least they were able to get their satellite in orbit
the AMC 14 that was a big failure.

True. Maybe the second time will be the charm.

Yes, I get all, PBS, CBS, ABC, NBC and CW. All in HD. I have other ones to. UPN, ETC. I get the SD Locals but I blocked them out.

I did switch to D from E and I hate their DVR's. If I could switch back to E , I would do it in a heartbeat. I am glad that things are working out for you with D. I like their programming and the picture quality but you can not beat E's DVR 722! You will find that D's customer service is no better than E's. I had zero problems with my installation. You got a way better deal than I did as far as programming and credits but that wasn't my objective in leaving E. I had no choice due to LOS issues with E. It was D or cable so I went with the lesser of 2 evils so to speak. Actually I do like everything about D except for the DVR, HR21!
By the way, I don't miss the Voom channels at all. Good luck and welcome aboard the D train.

The current DIRECTV HD receivers cannot receive OTA channels at all! For me, being able to record the OTA programming is imperative.Completely agree. If you can't record OTA as easily as dish delivered HD channels, then the DVR is severely crippled.
I've had both DTV and Dish. For me, Dish has the best quality. Opinions... like many other things, we all have them.
This stuff REALLY IS a matter of personal preference.

That is not correct. My 622 never mapped or gave guide information for my local
channels from Philadelphia. The locals were always stuck up in the 6000s. My 921 did, but not my 622. I have posted about this many times. I called E* a number of times about it and they did nothing to correct it. Last time I called about the mapping, E* response was well you have not called about it in a while so we thought it was OK.
E* still has to get its HD act together. The loss of the Voom channels is going to cause a temporary dip (higher churn) in E* HD subs. I am still predicting, E* sub growth for the 2nd quarter is going to be flat or even negative because of Voom. The $10 HD ultimate package (without Voom) is not competitive in the market place. Without the option to get HD RSNs, the HD only package is not competitive on a broad national market. The HD only package is good for someone like me with multiple providers, but I am not the typical sub. The HD only package will
get some niche subs that want to save money, but E* needs an HD offering
that is competitive on a broad national market. Right now E* does not have that.

I will also be switching in July after being with dish for a number of
years. From my point of view, the quality of Dish's Spanish language
package has deteriorated a great deal and at this point Directv has
the superior offerings. The replacement of the international channel
TVChile with a domestic channel:mad: (V-ME or HISTE -- both showing dubbed
English programming at the moment and just about every other moment)
was the last straw.
A few questions about your switch: What did you have to send back to
Dish? The LNBs? Did the installer use the existing mounting arm or
did he drill new holes for a new arm? Anything else I should know?
Thank you.

If you have an HR20 receiver, OTA is integrated into the receiver.
If you have an HR21 receiver, you need the AM21 tuner module ( http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=123012). Plugs into the HR21 with a USB cable; uses the same power cable as the HR21, so no additional outlets needed.
With either solution, recording/watching/etc. OTA channels is 100% completely integrated. It's as if you are watching a channel off the satellite.
The DirecTV DVR's are certainly not crippled. They do OTA just fine --- more misinformation floating around.

He drilled new holes and placed it in a place he felt was better. I live in Fort Lauderdale, Fla and with the Hurricanes he thought his spot would be better. I agreed. He could have used the old Dish spot but I agreed with him that his idea was better. Like I said, I really lucked out. This guy was excellent. I asked him how long he was doing installs and he said 9 years, so I think that had something to do with it. As far as what I am suppose to send back to dish, I am waiting for a return box to arrive from Dish. I am sending the 622 back. She said I had to send back the LNB's but they are still up on the dish and I am calling back to tell them if they want them they can send someone out to get them. I am not climbing up and taking them down. Not my job. Nothing else I can think of. Just try to get the best deal and hopfully your install will go as great as mine. Good Luck....Mark.
Great post and right on the money.
The AM21 I think is has a MSRP of $59.00. Not bad for what it does.
You know the AM21 has two ATSC tuners. So I can record two OTA channels at the same time. The HR21 also has dual SAT HD tuners. So I can program four sources at once over the three sources of the VIP622/VIP722.

It is clear that DirecTV does have more HD content including MLB
Dish does not have MLB.. Why... same reason we don't have Voom.. Dish could not negotiate the deal... So in 'our best interests' they are no longer trying.
http://www.dishnetwork.com/redirects/promotion/extra_innings/index.shtml
"The prospect of DISH Network reaching an agreement with Major League Baseball regarding the Extra Innings package no longer exists."
http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=1637322&postcount=1
"We offered quite a bit in terms of negotiations, in terms of other channels or other things we could do with Voom, maybe consolidate some of the channels down and get to a more workable number, a little less of the repeats and so forth, but that wasn't acceptable to Voom.
"And so, to make a long story short, they're no longer on the air. We're not having any discussions with them; in fact, we're in litigation with them - a judge has ruled that they're not likely to prevail in anything so far, and that's where we stand today. "
DirecTV has MLB

Now does anyone still think Dish has the lead?
The only thing Dish has going for it is "my DVR is better than yours" and in this camp many side with Dish and many side with DirecTV. The AM21 with Dual OTA ATSC tuners really starts to make the HR21 look like a very good product.
With the HR21 and AM21 I would be able to get more HD content and record from more sources at the same time ( two SAT HD and two OTA ASTC tuner verses two SAT HD and one OTA ATSC tuner).
Sorry.. but DirecTV is starting to look very good to me.
If Voom was still part of the puzzle I would not even consider DirecTV. But thanks to Dish I am looking and finding it may be better on the other side.
For those who are changing... Keep the information coming... Others here including myself are very interested in the technology differences. If it is just a matter of 'getting use to' a different DVR then I am ready to make the switch. If the HR21 is really hard to use then that will be a problem. Not so much for me but for others who are using the devices here.

The AM21 is available directly from DirecTV via their web site for $50 and that includes shipping.
I guess Harsh's comment was based on you have to order something else to get OTA on the HR21. Guess you could say the same thing about E* HD DVR, they won't record OTA ATSC until you connect an antenna to them.

Hows that Travel Channel HD treating you? o yeah you dont have it.

v-me and history en espanol are by far better than megatv or caracol. teleformula is also much, much better than canal once, sur peru, and sur mexico combined.

And how's FX looking in HD on Dish, oh yeah, you don't have it.;)

Now does anyone still think Dish has the lead?I used to think so, and for me they did have the lead. Then Voom went away. Now, I don't think ANYONE can possibly claim that they have the lead. It is really very sad that they have totally taken themselves out of the competition. :(

If Dish can get their act together and get all of the Fox affiliated networks such as Speed HD, FX HD, etc. up, I think a lot of the nay sayers for Dish HD will go away. I'd be more upset about VOOM but the fact that they never got new programming irked me out and I think it was a smart business decision for Dish to dump them. Now they have to capitalize on it.
Then Voom went away.
Voom was not showing any new content. and it has a ton of repeats. it was wasting bandwith and not attracting new customers.

I used to like the travel channel until it started with the top-ten,
cooking shows, and poker in Las Vegas nonsense. And don't even get me
started about Samantha Brown's Passport to Latin America, which showed
the 5 star hotels where she stayed in Rio, Lima, etc. I will take the
Lonely Planet and Rick Steve's travel videos in SD any day.

DirecTV also offers V-ME. Our package also includes the History
Channel and History Channel International and much of History en
Espanol consists of dubbed versions of programming on these channels.
As far as TeleFormula goes, much of its programming can be heard on
the Radio-Formula stations. I did not become a dish-network customer
to watch radio-programming.
I will miss LinkTV though.
