Been doing 1099 work and I may have to buy myself a notebook. Looking at Dells (will get to write it off on my taxes, but don't want to spend too much.)

Obviously have to carry unit with me on daily basis but don't want to spend for the ultra-lite. Rather have power instead of light (have carried notebooks before, so know the deal)

Most of the time my notebooks at work were handme downs so never really speced out new unit.

For dells are the Latitudes better then the Inspirons? If just feature different no big deal, but if one more durable would prefer that

Will be getting either a 256MB (leaving one slot open) or if budget allow will fill up slots with 512MB.

Minimum drive space is fine

Will have to go XP-Pro as my need to connect into NT/2000 Domains.

Any Insight appreciated.

The Inspirons are their better Laptop computer. I bought an Inspiron 4150 last December & love it. I purchased a refurbished one from the Dell website & got mine for a little over $1100. You can check out their laptops here. http://www.dell.com/us/en/gen/products/line_notebooks.htm also take a look at their refurb sales center. The refurbs are just as good if not better than a new one. You get the same warranty as a brand new one. Dell thoroughly tests their refurbs, so in a way they are better than a new one. Mine is a Pentium 4 with Windows XP. You can specify XP Pro if you prefer. Good luck. :)

See I'll disagree. I've delt with both in my line of work and Latitudes seem to be built better and are lighter than the Inspirons. When the Dell guys come to repair the laptops they all tell me the same thing, "Avoid Inspirons". I have a Precision M50 right now, which is a Latitude 840c with a 64 meg Open GL nVidia card in it.
