I got a call from Comcast today offering to buy out my contract and give me all the channels for 52.99 a month for 2 years. Will Dtv do anything to keep me?:

Depends on who you get, and how nicely you ask. Maybe some $10 credits or a free movie channel, those seem to be the most typical. If you pay your bill on time, have a lot of channels, NFLST, and stuff like that, they would be more likely to retain you. But, there's no guarantees.

why comcrap? just stick with D*tv if your happy. if you are for hd, comcrap can not handle what D*tv has to offer.
my sister has comcrap she pays 13.00 for DVR service and 13.00 for hd. her total monthly bill is around 110 bucks for one tv.

It may not be worth the effort. Make sure you check their offereings to see if they have the HD channels you want offered. It appears that Comcast on average has around 50 HD channels offered where DirecTv offers 96. Thats a big difference. At least to me.
Personally, comcast couldn't buy back my service no matter what they offered me. The 160gb dvr is a really sad sad PoS for an HD dvr. It was such a pain to have so little recording time for HD. Not to mention the horrible problem with it freezing, queuing key presses and finally trying to do everything a minute or 2 later. DirecTVs dvr is soo much better in my experience.

I see no reason to leave D* if you're an HD customer. Comcast will probably never keep up with HD.

For me it's not about price it's about quality.... I won't leave D* again unless I am too broke for Pay TV service... I will have OTA only before I go back to Time Warner...

After leaving Comcast in Jan. 2008 and seeing the difference in programming, I would not go back to Comcast even if it was free.

In my area they want 19.95 for the first HD DVR and 24.95 for the second one. I went into the local office to find out what it would cost me to get their internet and the women in the office tried to get me to switch. So I said ok lets break it down. When she gave me these prices for the dvr I said no thanks and left for sure.

I'm not trying to start a fight, but just because you got a call why should D* offer you anything ?
You are under contract to D*, so you just got something from D* when you signed up .
Congratulations on abusing the system dude! Good Job!
It's far from abusing the system, The system is geared in their favor anyway if one is truly considering a switch (when a carrot is dangled so to speak) it is completely reasonable to see if your current provider will offer any perks to keep you.
Good for you joeshan99

We're under contract to D* only for the first year or two (or whatever the conditions were when we first got D*).
Once that's over, we're free to switch. I applaud him for pitting Comcast against D* and coming out with a reason to keep the dish.

how do we know that he was not one of the customers who has 5 hearts or gold hearts, and that directv really really wanted him to stay

Indeed! (there, I've said it!) :D
I had Time-Warner (and the others who owned the local cable company before them) for 9 years. Talk about tearing your hair out! The parting shot in 2000 when I trotted in to their office to return my boxes was "you'll be back". Well, that was almost 8 years ago and I have no intention of ever going back. (or canceling DirecTV)

It's not abusing anything it's called compatition (and i really did't wan't to leave) But just to show ya the kind of profits they make the women offered every thing quick. All I asked was if there was anything they could do.

I think what many others are faulting you for is exactly that fact, you DIDN'T want to leave. Which means that the service and value is to your liking, but you still CHOSE to call and ask for freebies.

He should not be faulted for getting everything he can. The corporate entities all get every dime they can when they can.
I don't see anything wrong with a subscriber calling and asking for a deal.I did that with Dish. They offered,I left.
After my first year with DirecTV a CSR lost my grandfathered package.I called up told them I'm leaving they gave me an offer I couldn't refuse. That one of the main reasons I will stay with DirecTV.;) :D

The people who are complaining are the same people who probably already called and got the same deal. The big companys take every dime then can from us. I never told the csr I was leaving I just ask what the could offer me for my $116 month.
Good for you man. I got HD access waived for 9 mos before but thats about all the freebies I have ever gotten, I have a yr to go on my contract so we'll see what happens then. I might just go OTA, the prices are getting ridiculous.
I got a call last year from Comcrap saying they wanted to buy my dish for 400 bucks. I said if i sold my dish i would not be able to watch tv and hung up.
Old thread, but I've got a retention issue....
We have an HD-DVR, HD and SD receiver on Plus HD/DVR (and HD Extra ) with protection plan. and tax.. our bill comes to about $100/mo. From what I can tell my prorated termination fee is about $87 right now ( committment up in March of next year )
I like my D* service a lot ( been with them since 1999 ) but I want more HD DVR's. Problem is $200 + another 24 months of committment with an even bigger termination fee ( when I joined it was $300 and now it's $450 )
Meanwhile I'm an FTTP U-Verse customer ( internet only currently ) and their U200 + HD + 2 additional STB's is $80 + tax ... probably $85/mo.
That's $15/mo less, no hardware fees and no termination fees. Throw in $100 rebate, no installation cost and 1 month free service and it's very tempting.
They have actually started to roll the whole house DVR out so it's no longer vapor ware. It's not available in Austin but I'm guessing in a few months or so it will be and I'm going to have to be facing a very difficult decision.
So finally my question.... I'm not trying to game the system, but what might DirecTV actually be able to do if I call in and try to get an additional HD-DVR and a modest discount in my service pricing to make it comparable to U-Verse?
If I keep as is and get another HD-DVR I'll end up spending about $550 more over the next two years for DirecTV then I would with AT&T.

And there on screen guide is stuck in SD and looks bad on a HD TV.

With U-Verse you can only view / rerecord 2 HD shows at the same time and they are missing RSN HD's in CHICAGO they don't sports net HD or sports net + HD and that is big trun off for cubs fans.
They also don't have the big ten alts in HD.
as well less HD.
Comcast would get an earfull from me if they ever called my home and asked me to switch back to them from DirecTv. I've been with DirecTv for going on 12 years now. I would never leave DirecTv and give up my MLB Extra Innings package or my NFL Sunday Ticket Package. I'm just simply never EVER giving up DirecTv. If They offered me $1,000 dollars cash money to go back to them i would not do it. Football is HUGE to me on Sundays in the Fall and DirecTv is the only way for me to see my Bears games.

What are the differences? I have about had it with D*. I am sick of pixels and loosing all HD's on two receivers every single day. Tech support and the people who come out are useless to me.

Tech support and the people who come out are useless to me.I agree, although I would look at Dish first before jumping to cable. I am at the point where I would go to Dish just for the principal of it, regardless of who has the most hd or best PQ. But with Directvs concept of PPV counting as new HD channels, and Dish about to launch a bunch of new "real" HD channels, Dish may be the best choice regardless.
I'm surprised Directv has lagged by Dish so much. It is really shocking to me as they had so much momentum especially when Dish's bird was screwed up by the russian company, Dish has really pulled it together despite that setback while Directv seems to be the one that has faltered in the HD race. I'm sure Directv will pull it together. I just hope it's sooner rather than way later.

What are we talking about here? What HD channels that are important to you does Dish have that DirecTV does not?
Unless I'm behind in what Dish has added, I don't see what they could be.
