Your favorite ex Goalie has suffered some brain cramps.
"The racial slur uttered by John Vanbiesbrouck nearly ruined a young man's hockey career, blackened Vanbiesbrouck's own glittering hockey resume and put the Ontario Hockey League under scrutiny for the second time in two weeks.
Vanbiesbrouck, a former star goalie in the NHL, quit Monday as head coach and general manager of the Greyhounds in the wake of referring to captain Trevor Daley as a "nigger".
Vanbiesbrouck issued an apology to the city, fans and hockey club.
"Most of all I would like to extend my sincere apologies to the players," Vanbiesbrouck said in a statement. "My comments were inappropriate and out of character and I deeply regret my actions."
Vanbiesbrouck, 39, will retain his 25 per cent ownership stake in the Greyhounds, team spokesman Gino Cavallo said Monday.
Daley left the OHL team Saturday after he was told of Vanbiesbrouck's racial slur.
The 19-year-old Daley is a lightning-fast, smooth-skating offensive defenceman whose skills earned him an invitation to the Canadian junior hockey team's selection camp and made the Dallas Stars draft him in the second round last year.
Agent Bobby Orr said Vanbiesbrouck's remarks have taken their toll on Daley.
"He even got to the point he was talking about 'Gee I don't know if I want to play,"' said Orr.
But Daley plans to re-join the Greyhounds in time for their game in Windsor on Thursday.
"I think he's going to go back," Orr said Monday. "He wants to play.
"He's been hurt badly, but he's a wonderful young man and he'll be fine."
Vanbiesbrouck acknowledged using the racial epithet "more than once" at the billet residence of forwards Mike Amodeo and Jeff Doyle following the Greyhounds' 6-1 loss Friday to the Guelph Storm.
