I read of mixed results with these enclosures. Some say the fan is way too loud.

Is this case the "standard" for external drives for DVR's? Any other brands being used with good results?

I have 2 of these units. Unless you put your ear right next to the enclosure, the fan can't be heard at all.

I have 2 also with 1TB WD Green drives in them and they are never heard unless your ear is next to it.

I just boought one for over $60, bt I needed it same day so I had to go retail.

In checking around, I did find that there was evidently a bad batch with louder fans earlier this year. Mine was super quiet. In fact, at first I thought that I did not have the power plug fully seated, but when I got to withing 6 or so inches, I could just hear it.

That was fast. They may be out as it won't come up when searching their site anymore. I found it that way and the price was $49.99 but when I clicked buy, it ended up in the cart for $29.99. CircuitCity had them for $39.99 w free shipping last week but I missed that.

I had bought one from one of those on line pirates that takes your money and then doesn't ship it so I had to cancel. eBay has some okay prices but then there are a lot of crooks lurking there now too. I no longer use my checking account to fund PayPal but instead use a credit card. You can then flip it back on PayPal. If you use cash and get taken, PayPal will not help you despite what they say.

Try Googling in several pages deep. The good deals may not be up front.

They seem to have a good reputation so I'm springing for one. Already had bad results with a Cavalry 1TB so I am hoping not to get burned again.

The noisy fan issue seems to be a fluke. They are well isolated so they should be quiet. I have read some complaints about ease of assembly but then that could be operator error.

Well, you have to install 2 screws that are down inside the case, beside the hard drive. (basically the drive screws to a carrier, which then slide locks into the case and the screws keep the slides from moving.)

If you have a magnetic screwdriver you will have no issue at all. I had a good quality screwdriver (non-magnetic standard No 2 phillps) and I had no problem at all. I just made sure the screw was firmly on the tip of the driver and tension was enough to hold it there as I lowered the driver and screw into teh hole.

If you have workedwith tools much, it should not be a very big deal from my experience.

One thing I read looking around was about the screw head being too big and I wondered what they were talking about. When I installed them, I saw that the screws for the drive have this big mushroom head that squishes a rubber grommet down. The only issue is that the 2 screws that are closest to the fan housing can just touch the edge of it which might transmit vibration (or might not, who knows). So, I chucked the threaded end into my cordless dril and ran them against a ******* file for a minute or so and that took enough material off to not be an issue.

The whole operation from removing the drive from the Calvary enclosure to hooking it to the DVR took maybe 25 minutes and that was being cautious.

It comes with a complete set of cables and even an eSATA insert for a standard PC. I did not try the eSATA cable with the HR20 as myold one that I modified was still there, so I don;t know if it needs modification or not.

EDIT:

Ha Ha, it starred out the name of the file, which is another name for illegitimate child, but a perfectly fine name for a file.

I have an Acomdata 509 EIDE case that's quite nice -- It has USB or Firewire connectivity. I bought it on sale at CompUSA a few months before they went belly up. Fry's sells Acomdata Samba USB drive cases that take either EIDE or SATA drives for $29.99 == They're aluminum cases with passive cooling (no fans)
