View Full Version : nVidia 8600GT versus 8800GT video card?
How much benefit is gained with the 8800GT over the 8600GT video card? Is it worth the extra money for buying a new card and also to upgrade the power supply for it? Using it for HD video and editing. Very little gaming. The
CPU is an Intel Q9300 2.5 ghz Duo Quad Core processor with 6 gb of 800 mhz RAM running Vista 64 bit if that helps any.

For video editing you'll not gain that much to procure expenses.
running Vista 64 bit if that helps any.
Unless you have a very specific editing prg that *specifically* supports Vista64, that's going to be your biggest 'problem' right up front.
I just built a Vista machine for doing editing on (have two older machines running W2K), and did my 'homework' beforehand, and went with a nvidia 9600GT card; the cost analysis between it and lower/higher put it right in the mid-range. Of course, the prices continue to change, and the 9800's are dropping down into the same range as I type.
Every editing app I have looked or re-looked at, have been Vista32 only. As are the 'helper' apps like DV or HD camcorder capture apps.

Sony Vegas 8.0 will run on 64-bit Vista and can be used for capturing as well as editing. Also, a 64-bit version is supposed to be released soon.

"will run" - any 32 bit application will run in x64 MS OS.

Absolutely untrue. Go back to school.

Tell me that ! If you mix drivers and application then the school is open for you ! :D
Well, some 'not compliant' programs could have issues, but major wouldn't.

I personally own a stock 8800gt, and I love it. I would say go for the best value. If its only a small difference in price gaming or not at least your one step further away from being obsolete as the gpu industry blasts out cards faster than EA can pump out madden games.
I have 2 8600GT's in SLI mode under Vista x64 and am underwhelmed. I would certainly go with 8800GT.
And x64 has 32bit emulator which should run ANY 32 bit software, not drivers, but software.

Hansen, I don't have a 8600GT but I do have a 8800GT so I could not tell you how much better it is but I can say I have been very happy with the 8800GT.
