View Full Version : How to keep different screen resolutions for different XP accounts?

On Vista, I can have separate user accounts with each having their own privileges, desktop backgrounds, and screen resolutions.

On XP, I can have separate user accounts with each having their own privileges and desktop backgrounds, but for some reason, not screen resolutions. There are two accounts without administrator privileges, and one with. If a user changes the screen resolution, the next time an alternate account is used, the resolution will be what the first account chose.

Any way around this, so each user can have their desired, independent resolution, and it won't change based on another user's actions?

Not sure how definitive this is, but the OS-X vs. XP comparison on this (http://www.xvsxp.com/system/users_configuring.php) page says that XP user-based screen resoution is not supported.

Maybe you can find a utility to put in the "Start Menu", "Startup" folder for each user that will change the resolution? /steve

Drew, as far as I know, that is one of the differences between Vista and XP and do not know of anyway to change it. Sorry :)

This utility purports to do it. Haven't tried it out, however.

According to the c|net Editor's review:

"Users will find this freeware program, with its low memory consumption and accurate results, worth adding to your system."

Thanks for the feedback gang.

It's just bewildering that there would be support for individual user preferences MINUS an option for screen resolution.

When I visit my mother, I can just about use the PC because of the screen resolution (can you say HUMONGOUS ICONS?), and it's a pain to have to change the resolution and remember to change it back, even though there are multiple user accounts. When I forget to change it back, well, that just leads to a very long phone call from my mother to me as I try to walk her through changing the resolution back to what she needs ... Bad Microsoft XP! Bad!

And that my friend is why XP is no longer the premier OS in Microsoft's eyes. There, you've found it -- the one improvement they made!!
