View Full Version : D* Ch 310
I never saw this before and think its new. It tells you where you can watch The 700 Club, it list TBN and a bunch of local markets where it is available. Is this because of the issue with ABC Family?

My guess would be that this is indeed the reason. I know Pat Robinson was telling everyone to call DirecTV and tell them not to get rid of ABC Family.
I hope they do get rid of ABC Family. It's just a wast of space on the transponders. I'd rather get a shopping network in its place.

Oh no, not another shopping network please, we have enough of them now. But on the other hand I'm not upholding ABCFamily either, I agree it's wasted bandwith.

Guess we know now whats gonna happen with ABCFamily, eh?!! (seeing that appeal from Pat Robertson reminded me of how he was dealt with.....granted in a backhanded way on an episode of South Park...:D)

You want shopping channels come on over to E* :D We've got 10 of them you'll be sure to enjoy :D
Sad, on DirecTV's part. They don't even have the guts to have a talking head come on and explain things, they just put up a card.
And the card just lists local in cities they have locals in that have the show. They don't even bother to say "if you get your locals otherwise, check your local listings" and they don't bother to list the times the show is on (often wee hours, mid-afternoon, etc) .
DirecTV heads towards its meltdown, becoming "cable with extra football", breaking faith with all of its HD customers over a piddly little channel it could easily accomodate.

How does losing ABC Family send D* into a meltdown? How does it break faith with HD Customers? Would you like ABC Family HD? Yes I know I would love to see Pat Robertson in high resolution. Or maybe those feed the children infomercials, imagine how many more cans they could show on a HD screen!

Not carrying ABC Family could cause a problem at D* because ABC/Disney might start to withhold other programming like ESPN-HD unless D* relents. If ABC Family was a lone channel E*/D*/Cable companies would probably drop it like a hot potato if it gave them any trouble at all.
Major programming providers like Disney leverage all their channels at once. You want popular ESPN? You want to carry local ABC channels on your satellite? Well you better pay what we want you to pay for these other channels and carry them in the package we want you to carry them in.

That's not true!! Last I heard, Roxanne Austin was going to start having a CEO chat of her own sometime soon.

If they withold local ABC stations, that would probably be illegal.

Can't remember where I saw it (I'm looking) but it wouldn't matter to me one way or the other.

Local stations are withheld all the time, you see market XXX will be $4.99 until we get affiliate YYY signed up. Last year Dish had to put out a notice that all the FOX stations in LIL might have to be dropped because of contract negotiations. Maybe they do not actually "withhold" them, but demand enough money that it is effectively withholding them. If ABC said ok we own the local affiliates in these 20 markets, it will cost you $50/sub to carry them unless you carry all these other channels we want you to carry and then we will only charge you $.50/sub because of the package deal.

I'm guessing in a case like that, where it's local stations, the FCC would be called in. $50/sub is extortion, especially for local channels that you can get over the air for free.
1 - Its common practice for local station carriage or popular channel carriage to be tied to carrying minor channels like ABC-F. And, no, the FCC doesn't care or have any power over the matter anyway.
2 - Of course you can get local TV OTA for free. Which is why LIL was a dumb idea that nobody asked for.
3 - This whole thing is tied to ESPN-HD. If DirecTV does not have ESPN-HD on day one, it has punted the entire HD market and has broken faith with every DirectHD set purchaser. The simple deal is 1 - GET ESPN-HD, and if that involves taking the stupid ABC-F channel at 30 times what its worth, then do that. TOTAL Choice means TOTAL.

Agreed! I don't watch sports and I don't own a HDTV yet. ESPN-HD doesn't matter to me one way or the other. If you need to have ESPN-HD now, you know what to do, either pick up the phone and call 1-800-333-DISH or go buy a C-Band setup.
